Xantia rear height corrector

Post by CitroenCrazy »

Hi guys

Question - is there a need / means of bleeding the rear suspension ?

To explain, I took the rear height corrector off my Xantia today. The plastic linkage had come off, as a result of the ball on the height corrector corroding.
I'd bought a kit including a replacement ball a while back, ready for this eventuality.

Problem is, with the whole lot back together, the car refuses to rise from the bump stops. The front's ok , the back's not playing at all.
As far as I can see, I've put it back right. I made a note of the pipes' locations, so I'm pretty sure I haven't crossed them over.

Aside from taking it all apart & putting it together again tomorrow, I'm short of ideas.
Prior to removal, even when the linkage popped off, the manual height correction facility worked ok.

Oh, by the way, it's a hydractive car, if that makes a difference.

TIA

Did you adjust the clamp on the antiroll bar correctly? This needs to be done while the car is at normal setting, an you push or pull to get it to be at the right height, and then tighten the clamp. And you may need to wait for it to raise and lower and then wait a bit more for it to settle. Best do it on a car lift or a ramp high enough for you get under while the car is at it's lowest. It WILL drop suddenly as you adjust it, please don't kill yourself, it's a REAL possibility.

If that's ok. Sounds like some mechanism is stuck and pushing into the height corrector and keeping it open so the fluid doesn't come in to lift it up. Or you put it in the wrong way somehow (upside down, not sure if thats a possibility).

There isn't a way as such to bleed the 'rear' alone, it's a self bleeding system, when you lower the whole car, the weight pushes all the fluid into the reservoir, and any air dissipates there, another bleed that could be done would be to bleed the brakes, but if there are air in the brake lines I don't think it would affect the suspension or it's height.

When you bleed it in the above manner, dropping the car to lowest, remember to put it on highest too, so it gets full pressure again, do that a few times. But it seems like your clamp is off somehow.

It's very easy to put the pipes in the wrong way round - put it in low and see if the rear rises....

Yes indeed chaps; if you're going to make an elementary mistake, be sure to do it in public!

Lying underneath the car, before dismantling anything, I wrote down the positions of the two pipes on the offside.

When I put it back together, I carefully checked that it was consistent with my notes.

Why then, did I write them down the wrong way around ?!?!?

Just swapped them over, and we're back in action.

Make sure you hold the phone the same way when you go back under, if you go under the same way...
Tip-ex is the best solution really.

YELLOW Wax marker pencil for me (chinagraph type), Tip Ex comes off too easy.
