Double S motors Liverpool, anyone heard of them?

Post by dei9 »

Dear all,

Since I am not currently equipped with a proper location to work on my car at Liverpool, I found a specialist near me called Double S Motors (off smithdown road, liverpool). Has anyone heard of these guys or had any dealings with them?

They seem to be a small genuine company that seem know what they are doing (they have an SM in a workshop getting an engine rebuild). So they have quoted me 2 hours labour to do between 6 and 8 spheres (an hour being £40) plus the price of the spehres of course. I went to have a nosy this morning and it's giving me good vibes.

What do everyone else think? I'm not a fan of garages because I can usually do work myself, but it would be nice for the car to have some specialist attention and maybe a service stamp from there.

Thanks, D

For the fronts at least you dont really need anywhere other than the space the the car is sitting on to swap out the spheres.

The rears will need you getting under the car so maybe you need some garage space but ...
You can do them on a set of normal ramps on the drive or road if the mood takes you, even the bastard ones on an Activa. I know this from experience.

Given your location it might be as well contacting Westroen and asking them for a price to supply and fit.. they're very reasonable.

Westroen don't charge for fitting, you just pay for the price of the sphere. Unless they've changed their stance in which case thats news to me.

Hi there. Used DoubleS a few times and they a really good at what they do. They are a typical old style proper garage not just part replacement specialists like some are now

Hmmm im not so sure about them now!!

They charged friends a fortune for an egr replacment.. and then proceeded to tell them their turbo was knackered. . Then advised them to get rid of the car its gonna start costing them a fortune..

I looked over the said car today.. the turbo is perfect.. the vaccuum pipe to the wastegate had collapsed or something stopping the vaccuum.. half an hour I was from having a look.. to fixing it..

NOT IMPRESSED with them.

I had a decent experience with them, nice knowledgeable guys, but at the end of the day, there's a lot of BS talk to make money. He passed my worn bottom arm as a loose steering rack, and my first thought was, well you'd test the looseness of the steering rack AFTER changing the bottom arm surely. I offered him a testdrive to diagnose it properly, only under the weight of driving can u feel a loose bottom arm (it clicks around, not badly, but I know it's the bottom arm). Garages do a lot of expensive guessing. He also said to change the drop links would be £80! why? because they seize in place and need drilling out and stuff, and I was like, NAAAHHH, thats BS!
They won't be changing my bottom arm though, I'll do that myself.

Find as you like, but if your a specialist, you should not need to Blag, or tell porks.. you should know EXACTLEY whats what and how things work because you only work on those makes!

Blagging people these days to spend when they dont is not a good thing when people dont really have all that much disposable to spend.

One of the things I have noticed since moving into the country, word gets around very quickly.
There is a small customer pool so those that do survive generally are very honest and cut the blag out totally, it is easy to find out about them, often they have a Dad local who used to run it and they drink and live local as well. Their reputation is based on their actions more than any "city" indi.... having spent a good deal of my time in south London, believe me, I know what a blagger sounds like now.....(the buggers caught me enough times !)

I usually tend to avoid garages for three reasons: 1) because they are too expensive, 2) i like to do my own work and 3) i don't trust them, they can either blag a new job, or create a new job by shoving a screw driver into a bush or seal or something... (Dantom Autos did this to me before, again on Smithdown Road, Liverpool)
The only time I tend to use garages is when I need a job done asap, or I don't have the proper tools or work area, or it's an MOT.
