xsara - squeaky suspension?

I have a 98 Xsara TD estate which has an intermittent noise from (I think) the offside front suspension, somewhere. It sounds like a loud-ish squeak, when hitting a bump or hole, but it doesn't happen all that often & as I say is quite intermittent ( though according to my wife, it happens all the time when she's driving! ). Have tried "bouncing" the car at each corner, but it doesn't really move much at all - maybe this is the problem & the shocks have gone hard? The ride is not bad, a bit hard, but have just changed to the Xsara from a BX.
Any ideas would be gratefully received, thanks.
