That's exactly why I asked if he'd actually checked the switch, like Richard said ... I doubt something can happen to the locking mechanism/pin in the gearbox, but the wires or the switch itself are usual suspects ... not the only ones, but, usual ...

If you could get it on a Lexia, you could probably see whether it's working or not. Similar switch problems on C4 etc cause handbrake problems. Post up the last 8 digits of the VIN, and we can look up the part number - if the same as the C4 one, then it's not desperately expensive, and comes with a modified section of harness to try and reduce future problems.
Any chance you can also have a look how much the actuator is ? Been told that this could also be causing this problem.
