Xantia 1.9d starting issue.

Post by mirafioriman »

The old girl threw a wobbler last night.......

Went to it to come home, very slow starter as if the battery was flat. Turns out the battery wasn't flat as jump leads made no difference.

Other clue was the glow plug light came on much shorter than usual.

Got it started this morning by using a screwdriver across the starter terminals. Since then it has started normally on the key several times with a few hours in between.

I'm thinking ignition switch or glow plug relay? Anyone got any experience of this issue?

Thanks in advance :)

Tried a direct live straight to the starter. Looks like the starter (which was replaced last February) has gone faulty. Off to the motor factors today.....

It came from a local factors. The one that went faulty was reconditioned. They no longer sell that make and the replacement is new.

I managed to get a brand new one from a Citroen dealer that was chucking Xantia parts cheap cheap!

It solved the slow starting and I've kept the old one for refurb in the future! :-D

Well it did it again today! Same symptoms including the glow plug light. Left me stranded at the local refuse tip  In desperation I disconnected the glow plug relay and guess what she started! When I got home I reconnected the glow plug relay it started once and then did the same again. Disconnected it again and back to starting perfectly.

Looks like I need to replace the glow plug relay now

Well, there's been yet more developments.....

It did it again with the glow plug relay disconnected

By chance I put my hand on the battery earth terminal (which I've previously repaired) and if was pretty warm. So I tried a jump lead from the battery earth terminal to the bellhousing next to the starter. It then started. Might be my imagination but on the way home the headlights seemed brighter too :?

I'm going to run around for a few days with the lead on and see if it continues to start.....

Looks like you could have been right all along just the other lead.

Well jump lead fitted Monday and it's now Friday night and it's been starting fine. Looks like it is indeed the earth wiring. Will get it rewired at the weekend.

It might also do well to look at your live cables too as per posting I linked above.
