Remapping

Post by centurus2400 »

On Thursday afternoon I've got a man coming to remap the engine on my 2.0 Hdi C5 X7. Currently it's at the factory 136 hp setting, so I'm looking forward to having a few more horsepowers liberated.
My previous Mk1 was also mapped and when I passed it on, at over 180,000 miles, the engine was going as well as ever, so I have no qualms about getting the job done.
If you look up almost any remapping firm there are always a few customers who seem to have had problems, but all the reputable companies that have been around for a while obviously know what they're doing or they wouldn't still be in business…

When I bought my X7, there were a couple of 160's available, but I particularly wanted the panoramic glass roof and full leather of the only 136hp in stock. I reasoned that it would be easier to have the engine remapped than alter the interior, and there's no way the panoramic roof could be retrofitted.

I'll report back on how it all goes.

Just out of interest, how much power was the MK1 C5 after you had it mapped?

I shall be having my 90 bhp Berlingo done in the new year. A heady 120bhp ish awaits :-)

It was up from 110 to about 135-ish. It was a nice thing to drive and the improvement in performance was quite noticeable.

I think that problems arise when all that power is used for a sustained period, when towing for instance. The performance of modern diesels is good that you can't use full throttle for long so they don't suffer.

Peter. Why would it suffer if full throttle for sustained period? My 110 has 177,000 miles on and is being tuned tomorrow.

We will use it on the Autobahns through Germany next week.

Had 127 mph on S1 so looking forward to seeing what S2 will do if safe to do so.

There's a few nice straight stretches near Frankfurt

Yes, I agree. My 110 didn't seem to have any problems, or even get even slightly hotter than normal being driven flat out all the way from Calais to Brussels then back

Because of the increase of stress and temperature. You can't drive flat out from Calais to Brussels and back without numerous speeding tickets and crashing into something  . I am talking about using constant full throttle as when towing a heavy caravan or trailer.

Because of the power of modern engines you very rarely have to use full throttle at all for any length of time but not to many years ago you did, and risked head gasket failure at the least or complete engine failure if the temperature got high enough and I think that would still apply if the engine was pushed hard enough for long enough.

You're right Peter. Calais to Brussels is slow until you get caught up with the Belgium idiots. Worst drivers in Europe. British are a close 2nd possibly.

Well, obviously not completely flat out but I averaged 94mph from Brussels to Calais on the return leg...

That's average. Not maximum. As I averaged 74 mph for the whole 690 miles from my home, to Brussels, and a few other places in Belgium you'll gather a lot of that was spent going as fast as the old girl would go.

I seem to have accumulated no accidents and no speeding tickets.

I wonder what a properly fettled 8V HDi engine could do, if it were really pushed? PSA seem to have come up with a solid reliable engine (when properly maintained).

In my youth I would have been interested but I don't drive fast enough now, I drive for economy rather than speed.
