Dodgy NS Elec Window

Hi guys,

Hope you're all well.

It's come to that time of year for trip to Austria for Xmas.

One problem. NS Elec window has become intermittent.

When I waggle OS Door jamb wiring it works so can it be categorically that wiring can anyone advise please?

Hi Roger, good to hear from you! I trust you and Sylv are well and happy?

Yep, if the wiggle test restores normality then you can be happy it's wiring and nothing more than that..

Is this on the HDi or the S1 1.9?

What's the best repair procedure for a damaged cable?

Do you really want that answering Roger??

The BEST way is to strip the harness out of the door, remove the door, then pull the grommet back off the wires and strip them right back AND IM NOT JOKING EITHER!!

Now though heres the PITA! Where the wires have broke you will find the copper cableing will have oxidised, this means therefore they will NOT solder together very well.. unless there some sort of special paste that will clean them up.. but the procedure then is to solder the wires together, and best done sooner rather then later while they could well be still just joind together because of you get two or even three wires broken there less chance of getting the correct ones joined together...

But, sadly thats what its gonna take.. Now see, if ONLY they had used the XM/306 method of cableing, they use circular plugs at the door shut, which mean unplug, remove door, and repair off the car...

Late cars suffered worse Roger.. Poor quality cable, very brittle.

It's difficult, I'd have the door card off, release the door wiring so the rubber concertina can get pulled out and loose, get into the loom in the door pillar and replace the offending wire right back to a point where it is not being repeatedly bent as the door opens and closes.

A job where you join in the concertina itself can be thought of as a quick and temporary fix only. It will go again as soldering already brittle wire just makes it even more brittle..

Been here a few times, Xantia AND 306's.. and rear doors on Xantias too...

What IS intereting though so far, and Ive not come across it yet is XM door harness dont appear to suffer this... I think though my theroy is though that the harness comes out the A pillar, and drops down to the door plug but its LONGER on the XM from pillar exit to door plug, this giving longer length of wire and less twist action when opening and closing doors, where Xantia and 306 or shorter... and the Xantia one is more common as it acts as a /\ type of action and is more likely to break wires...

Thanks guys. Well it just so happens that I have a spare door with loom from a late S1. Hope it is the same wiring! Problem is that the spare door has sat around in the rain outside so maybe not good!

I think you will also give up on that idea too.. theres some bunch of wires in there and theres no plugs near by citroen made it as part of the main loom so even with another door you will still be looking at a large soldering job which ever you do...

When I had to repair failed wires in Gracies' rear doors I added in about 0.5m wire per repair, and then threaded the excess length both ways (into door and pillar), leaving enough to flex without being stretched, so they shouldn't fail again.
