2009 C5 Hydraulic shock change

I have a leaking front shock on my 2009 C5 Tourer which I need to change, however it's got hydraulic suspension which I've not tackled before.

The main thing I need to know is how to de-pressurize the system and leave it in a safe condition to work on, so not to cause injury. Also has anyone carried out a shock change on this type of C5 and could point me in the correct way.

Don't get me wrong I'm well able to do the mechanics of the job and have a low mileage replacement unit, just bit weary of the high pressure system.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's not just the leakback pipe having failed? Strut failure is not exactly common except for events of damage.

It is very common on X7. And I wouldn't buy a used one, unless you want to change it again very soon.

And there is extended warranty for these struts, so check from main stealers first!!

It went in to a stealer who advised the shock was leaking, so took him at his word.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Mine was done at a Citroen main dealer under warranty a few months ago.Can't remember the cost as I wasn't paying but it was certainly over £230

Part is 180-230 depending where you buy it. If I've understood correctly, it takes about 1 - 1,5 hour to change one.

Citroen claimed the Hydractive 3+ suspension on the C5 X7 was maintenance free for 5 years or 200,000km - presumably your 2009 car is just over 5 years old now

There's 2 ways of depressurizing the system - with a Lexia/Diagbox diagnostic equipment, and without.

Depressurizing the system ; Using the diagnostic equipment
Start the engine.
Set the height control to the "LOW" position.
Wait for the vehicle height to be in the required position.
Stop the engine.
Connect the Lexia/Diagbox equipment to the vehicle’s diagnostic socket.
Switch on the ignition.
Carry out an global test.
Go into the menu :

Suspension
Depressurizing the system

Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
Wait for the vehicle’s suspension to sink completely.
N.B. : This takes around 3 minutes.
Switch off the ignition.
Disconnect the battery.




Depressurizing the system ; Without the diagnostic tool
ESSENTIAL : Any LDS fluid recovered must not be re-used.
N.B. : The suspension can be depressurized on each axle individually.
Disconnect the battery.
Raise the vehicle and support on axle stands, wheels free.
-Depressurising the front axle
Place a hose on the pressure release screw - this looks like it's a screw on top of the suspension strut on the drivers (RH) side.
Gradually unscrew the pressure release screw .
Wait for the pressure in the hydraulic circuit to fall fully.

Old thread, but I need to depressurise. I have a working Lexia3 running Diagbox v.8.13. I presume those instructions are for the Lexia software, not Diagbox? Where is depressurise in Diagbox (v.8.13)?

Yes, saw that, but he manually depressurised which means you waste some LDS and used the correct method of undoing the drive shaft bolt. I depressurised using lexia3 and Diagbox which doesn’t lose fluid (link in my post just above) and using the other method for strut replacement which is in a YouTube video below. Handy to have how others have done it though for things like the sphere removal. Ta.

Or just go into the suspension ECU (after a Global Test) and then it will be in one of the menus there.
