Xsara Automatic Gearbox Issues

Post by gadgetgricey »

Interested in an Automatic Xsara , but has a slight issue with the gearbox.

According to the seller, its sometimes goes into "safe" mode when setting off from cold. Give it a couple of miles for everything to warm up. Turn the engine off and on again, and all is well? Now showing no warning lights and the gearbox acts as it should until next time it occurs.

Thinking a fluid change would be a start, but just wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

Thanks again

Dave

After owning three autos in a row, (one whose gearbox failed) personally I would not touch any auto that has a known fault that is putting it into limp mode.

Otherwise you too might end up with a 140 page long blog... :rofl2:

This fault of the AL4 has been well known for over ten years. It's cheap to fix.

If someone has been too tight or stupid that it's not resolved by now on their car, you've a risk further damage has been caused (as I pointed out on FCF less than two days ago). It's an each-way bet.

Is it a hdi auto then dave? Al4 auto it is unless all the xsara engines got al4 auto boxs.

Cheers both,

How easy is this change, Can it be done in situ?
Yes it is an Hdi.

Thanks

This will be the same setup as the c5 mk.1 hdi auto setup then in which case im loving. Be interesting to see how the zsara compares to the c5.

I beleve it can be done in situ as the valve block is on the front of the gearbox behind the raised cover on the front facing the radiator.. ive not done the c5 yet.. its a to do job.. so I cant say how hard or easy..

what ever the top up of fluid MUST NOT BE A DEX FLUID AT ALL...

only an esso Lt type fluid ONLY ... Cant remeber the full name of the fluid.
