Lexia on Windows 7

How much memory has that laptop got, and how much can it handle? If you don't know the second part, pop up the make and model number and we can look it up on the relevant website.

The reason I ask is simple. The more memory the laptop can handle the less it needs to use the hard drive swap file (which is a sort of memory work around). If it can handle certain multiples it can then use a technique called 'Memory Interleaving' that greatly increases the speed the memory can work at.

Basically with a virtual machine there will be an option somewhere in the menu to "pass through" specific USB devices, so that the virtual install of XP can "see" the Lexia interface instead of Windows 7 seeing it. I just don't know off hand where that is in virtual box.

You might need to increase the memory allocation for XP to about 500MB otherwise XP may run really slowly, (try it as is first though) but with only 2GB of total ram (which is marginal for Windows 7) I wouldn't set it any higher than 500MB otherwise Windows 7 will be starved for memory. Bit of a balancing act with that amount of total memory.

Ive plugged Lexia into the USB and nothing has happened....

You can change the memory allocation at any time. Just shut down the virtual XP then go into the preferences in virtual box and change the memory setting then start XP again. It won't let you change it while XP is actually running.

If we know how much memory your laptop can handle to would be useful. Windows 7 64 bit can handle a lot more than 4GB (which is a limit of all 32bit O/S).

Paul, did you install the virtual box extension pack ? It's a separate download that you need for USB pass through to work.

Nope, but I selected Two USB filters is the settings and then it found the Lexia in the USB port, so its all activated now and working!

I cant thank you and Ben8 enough! Ill invest in some more memory when money allows, its a Samsung E352 laptop, no idea what the memory boards are. Ill open it up and see if I can find them and get an idea..

Ill close it all down now, reload, and re connect lexia and see if it works straight off..

It appears that you can upgrade the memory to 4Gb ram, but no more (if what I have found is correct). That would improve the performance somewhat.

Yea, I opened the memory cover and its says ddr3 only in the back, and currently 2gb on one chip leaving a vacant space for another 2gb chip board.

Anyone got a 2gb DDR3 board going begging???

Take a look at the memory in the laptop. There are a lot of numbers, that relate to speeds and so on. You want to get another memory card with the same parameters. I would do a Google search on the numbers to see what comes up.

When you get the memory treat it very carefully. Static electricity will fry the memory if you aren't careful. For example, if, when you comb your hair, you hear a static crackle, the currents generated are at least twice that necessary to burn out the chips. I would get hold of an anti static wrist strap (for a few quid) from somewhere like Maplin.
