Cost for replacing EGR valve?

Post by osx »

Anyone got an idea how much would it cost to replace a faulty EGR valve? Don't think it is something I can do as it seems to be difficult to access.

Assuming it's the early 140PS unit, Citroen quote £260 for the valve :rofl2: OE ones on the bay for £120, which is more like it. Appears to be on the back of the engine, so I'm guessing it's a git to change. Ball park 3-4 hours to change? So at an Indy you are probably looking at £350 - £400....

Just changed a seat leons at work and that was a 4.5 hour job and a bill of over £630.

So yeah some are a real pig do to do.

Citroen quote about £500+VAT and £200+VAT at the Indy. No idea why the difference.

Is the valve faulty or just gummed up with carbon deposits? Have you tried a spray can of EGR cleaner down the pipe to the valve? I've had good results using a can of Wynns EGR cleaner. Spray it and let it soak for half hour before starting up and then giving it a few short bursts while the engine runs. (long bursts will stall the engine)

The indi doesn't have to have the staff factory trained, keep a hundred grands worth of spares and a hundred grands worth of special tools in stock or be obliged to employ sales staff to turn over a quota of vehicles to keep the franchise :-D

Tried it but didn't make a difference. Think it is stuck open.

If I read my DocBackup correctly, the job of replacing the EGR valve in-situ is timed at just under 2 hours and is rated easy. The only specialist tools needed are pliers to remove a clip !

How long would blanking the EGR take then? I can barely see it so think better access would be from underneath.

I'd guess around the same time as you've got to get to the same bits.
There is an actuator test for the EGR valve that can be performed with a Lexia. A ticking (like a clock) apparently shows the EGR valve is working fine.... either that, or your problem is you've got a clock stuck in the mechanism

Just out of interest, does blanking off the EGR, increase engine performance & make the car more economical?

No. Well, it made no difference to my 2.0 HDi C5 that I had a couple of years ago. Slightly worse economy, not as pleasant to drive. Berlingo much the same until it got fed up and put the engine warning light on.

EGR replaced and car back to normal. Last week or two it was difficult to keep economy over 40mpg so I am sure it will improve. Slightly more expensive at the end (£310) as I opted for a more expensive valve. Should I have asked them to replace the cam belt as well to save some time or is it a completely different job?

Completely different jobs. The only common denominators would be disconnection of the battery and handing you the bill at the end !
