strange noise

Post by froggy »

Hi, while driving my s1 Xantia, Iam hearing a very strange noise coming from the passenger side. The noise sounds like.......long wave radio trying to tune in, then it changes to a tap dancing mouse ! radio is off! heater is off! the " one who must be obeyed" in the house ! the noise happens occasionally , very annoying, any ideas anyone......cheers Terry.

It does sound like instability in some sort of electronic device.
I take it that the radio is still workng OK?

Has it got aircon and or climate control? Doesn't the fan circulate slowly even when "off" on these?

No, but the fan can make some interesting noises when it is running slowly in 'AUTO' mode. Its speed can vary up and down quite audibly...

I reckon the blower may be a good place to start looking...

I think it could be the little fan from temperature sensor in the dashboard or the stepper motor from the air mixer.
Froggy, also at my car I'm hearing a sound like you describe and is the stepper motor from air mixer flap. I think there are some pinions there and need some grase but I don't know how to dismanlte it.

My wierd and probably wrong thinking is that there might be a high-resistance 'something' (insect?) across the radio switch, leaving it slightly on, so to speak.

The air mixer flap motor does seem like the most likely cause - the clicking could be it reaching the end of its travel prematurely and trying to jump a tooth on the cog...

If you have Lexia access it's possible to manually exercise the mixer flap with the Lexia, which would at least identify the source of the noise.

The tiny fan behind the air vent next to the clock can also make some very strange noises...sometimes you can clean the dust out of the bearing with a blast of compressed air.

If I wriggle the electric cables that run from passenger door to car body.......the volume of noise alters. ( the clicking noise gets louder or quieter )

Any chance you can get the sound recorded? Your initial description brings to mind the sound of a radio amplifier circuit picking up a mobile phone's handshake to a cell tower.
