Just been recovered in C5, 2005, 1.6, Oil leak

Post by Stickyfinger »

Ok, oil pi55ing out from under(?) the (?) vacuum pump.

No oil pressure drop, oil level down from full to 3/4, No temp increase, no water loss, oil comes out under revs, no smoke, car runs fine and starts OK without any warnings

Thoughts on this, any help with what it may be

Turbo oil return starts off in that location.... If you take the turbo inlet hose off you should be able to see it behind / under the turbo. If it is, turbo needs to come off to get at it though....

10 is it - it's just a rubber hose. Might also be the feed to the vac pump - there is just a drilling in the head, and there is an o-ring on the vac pump that seals it - this is under rather more pressure than the turbo return and might be a more likely candidate - it's a lot easier to remove and check as well! Source should be visible if you remove the pipes, clean it up and let the engine run - take care that nothing gets sucked into the turbo though!

Richard your a star mate, you are making me feel better now :), logic tells me its not a massive problem but my inexperience makes me wobble :)

Any thoughts on why it blew ?, just old or another underlying reason other than old/decided to blow because I taxed it for a year TODAY ! ?

As per this ?, two seals, I take it the right side (with the gauze) is under the pressure.

Even if it is the turbo return, it's not that hard to get it off, and it will give you a chance to remove the filter from the oil feed pipe!!

Info on turbo removal linked in this thread: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=47677" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; see also the advice near the bottom about releasing the spring exhaust clamps, and if you can wait a few days get a pair of the proper clamp pliers to remove the bands!!

Re the vac pump, yes, the oil feed is at the bottom right, and there is an o-ring that fits in the triangular groove. There are only 2 bolts holding the vac pump on - one is extended and has the ball on the end which supports the air intake pipe. You may well find that inlet filter to the vac pump is blocked, which may have caused high pressure - if this is the case, then I would take the top off the vac pump and inspect its internals. If it is full of small bits of burnt plastic / carbon, then I would strongly advise dropping the sump and cleaning the oil pick up, and removing the turbo oil feed filter. Of course, all that is academic if it's the turbo return....

Has it got a DPF? There appear to be 3 seal sets, ranging from £8.50 - £11.50. If I've got the right one, I could send you the old one out of mine to get you going.... Non DPF only lists 2 of the seal sets.

Hi

Well its at the local garage now, lots of sucking air thru teeth and whispers of "its a Citroen"....so

I have no doubt that I will have to assist them parts wise and advise so anything here is going to prove very helpful for them and the guidance I will (insist) give them to follow, so ANY help would be great----? Are the o rings for the Vac-Pump available as a separate part for example.

I am happy to accept any parts you know will be needed and am happy to pay you for them, where are you based ?

Plan at the moment is to strip it and have a look today and see just what is the problem/parts needed.
They cannot start work fixing it till Monday anyway so I have time to gather parts/info. I have a Cit Main Stealer about 15 miles away.

The C5 is a 2005 facelift, 1.6 HDi 110hp VTR Estate Euro 4 FAP.

Local garage...brave

Once you have a confirmed diagnosis, let me know if you need part numbers / prices etc. If required, yes vac pump seals available separately, but there are 3 types, so will need last 8 digits of VIN to confirm which ones fitted

OK guys, just got the car back, £79.00 bill for new return pipe and checking oil feed banjo strainer, (totally clean) and oil change/filter.....and a visual inspection (with camera) of the oil strainer within sump, all clean as well.

What was it ?, well the Oil Return Pipe from the Turbo. It had softened within the heat guard wrapping and split.

Worth Checking as the dealer says they replace a good few each year on Citroen's and Pugs at about 7 years on.

Thanks for the help guys
