Strut : What is this?

Post by elvito »

Hi,
I am wondering what is this plastic/rubber thing?
Is this a part of the strut top or the strut cylinder? Where is it came from?
I just found it out today, but I've been noticing small amount of LHM on the strut since months ago.
Thanks.

It can only be what's left of the rubber snubber (limit stop) that normally sits up inside the strut top rubber around the strut shaft. Like the snubbers on the rear suspension arms they eventually perish and disintegrate.

They can be replaced but it means separating the strut shaft from the strut top so the new snubber can be slipped over the shaft. Not a particularly difficult job but a bit messy in terms of oil spillage. Also be sure to use some loctite on the face of the big nut on the top of the strut top when refitting it or it may weep slightly and/or work loose.

There are also two small o-rings at the top of the strut shaft inside the top of the strut top, if the lower one is leaking it could leak oil down the shaft and possibly cause the snubber to perish at an accelerated rate.
