Xantia 1.9 loud ticking

Post by dav3y »

Hi

I am at a bit of a stumble and require pointers on where to go next with various

Over the past week I have noticed the engine getting a little noisy, no apparent fluid leaks and all topped up. earlier the ticking increased in frequency rapidly and lost power on steering and the battery light came one. I let the car cool down before trying to start again.

The ticking is coming from the left hand side of the bay roughly although very hard to pin point, possibly, carb / belts area. On cold the ticking is not apparent, only where it warms up properly. I thought it may be coming from the belts area and as I was inspecting with a torch and noticed smoke being pulled up by the belts with what I though may be small visible particles in ( this is where is start to cringe ). On revving the engine both slowly raising and sharply while under the engine, the ticking does not appear to increase.

I checked the central unit that I used to undo pressure on while doing rear spheres before and all looked ok and I don't think ticking came from here. I got in the car and did the citrobics to check, car raised, lowered and raised again. On attempting again the car no longer raises and seems to be stuck just above low. Pressure in steering although when turning I can hear what I can only describe as loud screeching / scraping ( braking ok ).

On turning on the heater fan full blast the ticking in the engine ( different from the steering noise I think ) rapidly increases in frequency. After leaving the car in front of a neighbour for a few hours while scratching my head, I was asked to move, they had their headlights on and noticed smoke.

Sounds imminent although cars only just done 60k, I don't know enough about this to diagnose properly, hopefully someone's come across something similar?

Thanks, Dave

Is there a power steering / pump that controls hydraulic pressure?

Took it out for a run and starting, low pressure in steering, driving ok, stopping low pressure again. Noise changes to a squealing occasionally also.

Power steering and suspension work off the same pump. Thats the top one on the left when you look in the engine bay with two steel pipes and one rubber feed pipe going to it.

it sounds like your aux belt tensioner is buggered there fore not applying enough tension on the aux belt and when you apply more load via the altinator by switching things on its slipping on the belt and getting hot hence the smoke.

I think you need to look closely at the tensioner. . Late xud engines used a hopelessly crap tensioner setup which commonly wears the needle rollers in the tensioner rendering it useless and a whole new spring and tensioner is needed at around 80 quid.

thats my bet on it though.

Thanks guys, makes sense.

Occasional squel would make sense on the belt

Yes, it now does a "rolling rattle" which makes sense with worn pins. Better take a look at this setup.

I have been able to purchase general items from local suppliers but I guess this setup may be a bit more specialised? I'll let you know how I get on, cheers

Hmm after starting the job i didnt't realise what an awkward job this would be for a novive mechanic. I realise ism missing some tools and the amount of space to work in is very minimal, not a quick sunday afternoon job, or at least not for me.

I read up on the above although I think I am going to have to ask a mechanic to do it for me :(

I am in Hastings east Sussex if anyone knows of any good mechanics, thanks

Before you stick new one in give it some blobs of good high melting point grease as most makes are very shy with it!!! Copper slip or graphite powder is good as they get hot cold plus water thrown at them and both copper and graphite provides lube if dry still more than none!

You need Citronut Malc, he's up in St. Leonard's... I can personally recommend him as he's worked on my Xantia, I'm sure others can too.

Somewhere up on Seddlescombe Road. Off Briers Ave, or something. Reminded me of Richard Briers the actor anyway, wherever he's near.

Just to let you guys know, that yes you were right, this was the tensioner.

After giving it a bash myself and realising i might make a hash of it putting it back together, i looked up citronut and certainly glad i did ! As well as only being a mile away from me, a true fountain of citroen knowledge, a great chap and a top notch job. Not to mention if it was not for malcom i would have most probably lost my camshaft pulley by now as well.

Yes, the tensioner was a mess but the actually ticking / dinging i was hearing was the camshaft pulley. My one is in two parts and the rubber holding the two had worn away and was slipping inside itself, when it did, that was the Ding ! ding! ding ! of the inner sleave hitting the out sleave ( i think ).

Three cheers for citronut! =D> =D> =D> Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed
