Final diagnosis: two different issues...
1) Comms unit needs replacing. I have a replacement with the identical serial number and I'm fitting it tomorrow. (£55 from a car being broken).
2) ABS ECU is totally failing to communicate. Dealer quoting £691.56 to replace!

I'll replace the comms unit and see if it changes anything.

So, MOT due very soon. Anybody in the South West able to replace / sort out the ECU issue / has any other ideas? £700 is a bit rich all things considered!

Hi.

That's a cheap price to supply and fit the ECU - the part alone was that much when ours was done. It's probably worth it given the age and value of the car.

There haven't been many 02 and 03 plate C3s about for a while now - I'm willing to bet that the ABS ECU saw a large proportion of them to the scrappers.

The ABS of a C3 is not that different to other ABS units. No communication means it either has breaks in the twisted pair of comm wires, or no power, or no earth. Check your maxi fuses, in addition to F9 in the engine bay.

Changed the comms, which solved the airbag issue completely.
Just the ABS light to go!
Checked the connections, but alas the unit seems to have gone to Citroen heaven.
Checking her in at my local dealer to replace and MOT the car. A couple of tyres thrown in and it's a big old bill.
Anyone want to buy a car...! ;)

Oh, one really interesting thing: the inside edge of both front tyres seems to be excessively worn.
I'll get them aligned again, but just thought I'd mention it. No idea if this may have had any effect(?)

That's usually failing bushes in your front wishbones. They're not the most durable. Pattern wishbones are often a quick and economical fix.

Ours went mad before the eventual failure, which was only visible on the Lexia. Hoped it would be a connection issue, but sadly it wasn't. My gut feeling (having seen several cases on here since ours went) is that they're prone to failure, even on the later cars (there was a recall for water ingress on the early cars).

Before you commit to the dealer, have a word with bba-reman, they may be able to repair it

It's certainly not unknown at BBA: http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?c ... oen-C3-ABS

I suspect that the £690 odd is just the cost of the new ECU. Add on the labour to fit, plus new brake fluid, tyres and MOT, and I doubt there'll be any change from £1k....
