C5 4HP20

Post by pavlebo »

I have c5 with automatic gearbox 4HP20. Today we hear a strange sound from the direction of the gearbox. When placed gearbox in position D, the car goes for about 500m and then stopped, changed from D to R is not helping. I turned off the car and after 15 minutes, repeat, C5 go around 500m to 1 km, and then stop again. Pressing the accelerator pedal is not helping.

Whether the transmission is destroyed?

Yes it sounds like the box has expired and will need replacment or rebuild.. Had it ever had a Fluid change at all?

What sort of miles,? Which engine petrol or diesel? Diesel 2.0 hdi use AL4 and 2.2 HDi use the HP4 20.

ZF claim a sealed for life gearbox, but none are really. A fluid change always helps a gearbox work for longer.

I concur it's dead.

Rebuild is possible but be prepared to replace the oil pump and have the TC refurbished.

See my website for details of how to do the rebuild. It's easier than it looks

After just having done an RX-8 'box recently and having stripped an ML5 I still say automatic 'boxes are easier than any manual box...

Easier perhaps being a relative term

Get a scrap one as a practice-piece and go for it Paul.

I never recommend going into one you want to fix properly unless you've practised first on a scrapper.

You've got the manual haven’t you?

DO A FLUID CHANGE NOW!!

Use ONLY Esso LT71141 fluid ONLY, DO NOT USE any Dexron type fluid!

Paul, excellent advice on both counts :-D

The second is absolutely mandatory. Take care of fluids that claim to be LT71141 compatible. They aren't and a look at the small print will show they're actually Dexron III in disguise

Only Esso and Mobil make the genuine stuff.
