xantia ratle after cambelt change

Post by Goran »

Hi this is my first post here, and i did not post so far because i had no need. U guys are doing very good job :-D
Now i have a problem that i cant solve. I have Citroen Xantia 1.8 i 8v. My mechanic changed my cambelt and tensioner pulley. He said that my cambeld timing was off by two notches, and made correction with new one. And now i hear some rattle coming from the engine, also mu fuel consumption hes gone sky high. Now i want to do this myself and i need detailed instruction where are the holes for locking pins and how to align both crank shaft and cam sprocket. With images if posible :) And if there are some other pointers to tell me that i made good installation, so i don't destroy my valves and cam shaft with wrong timing.

Sounds to me as though he has the timing out, it was two teeth out I would think the valves would be hitting the pistons which sounds like what's happening now. I would take it back to him.

Rattle could also be pinking.. or ignition advance.. if the car was running fine before iI'd say he has made a mistake somewhere. .

For two teeth out you would of known before ...

Just possible he used the hole in the crankshaft pulley, and the pully damper has started to fail.
If the car was running well before, then he should have checked the flywheel hole, before just retiming using the pulley!
Ideally, the car should go back for remedial work, at no cost to the owner.
However, I can understand his/her reluctance. The mechanic should have noticed the problem before giving the car back and should have investigated it there and then, or failing that, loaned the OP a car until such time as the job could be done properly.
The fact that this wasn't done suggests the mechanic was unaware of the car running like a bag of nails and might therefore not be competent to rectify it.
Damage limitation is possibly wise...

First,thanks for fast replay :)
When i took the car back, he said to me that the rattle was from the valves and that they need tuning. The crankshaft pulley damper is ok, i need to know one thing when getting the right timing do u need to get the crankshaft hole to align at same time as cam shaft hole?

Need tuning? If it wasn't rattling before he fitted the belt he's got the timing wrong. A Haynes manual would probably give you all the info you need to set the timing.

I wrote it wrong when i said that valves need tuning, i meant that valve clearances needed adjusting. At least that was what he said.
Anyway I went back to mechanic he put the timing back as it was and the rattle is gone. No damage is done to the engine.
My thanks to all that replied. Cheers!

Yup. That's pretty much how it works.
Pin should slip easily into all the holes, if it fits in any.
However, there have been instances where the hole in the crankshaft pulley is out of position, something that is generally believed to be because the pulley damper is failing.
More reliable, but harder to access, is the flywheel hole.
There have been several postings about this issue lately.
In any event, glad you got it sorted

Good, I'm pleased you get it sorted. Valve clearances don't change all of a sudden, it happens gradually.
