Noise could have been the belt disintegrating but after fitting a new one have a good look at it running to make sure its sitting squarely on the pulleys. There is a tensioner that you need to release which can be a bit difficult unless you have three hands, a Haynes manual would be a good investment. Before you order a new belt check the old one for length or if its broken work out the length by wrapping a piece of sting round the route, they have a happy knack of sending the wrong size.

you also have to be aware if/when the aux drive belt fails/shreads/comes off, there is a high possibility parts of the aux belt can worm there way into the cam belt covers, and cause the cam belt to fail,

it is a prudent measure after aux belt failure to remove all the cam belt covers just for peace of mind,

whilst your in there is a good time to fit a new cam belt as well, of course not if its recently been done, and theres no sign of aux belt in there
