Did you take a pic if it to show us. Later fuel filters are a sealed unit and you change the whole lot. Not just the element..

Well that would make sense but I already bought the element, and the filter housing has the min & max markings although the marking on the cap had gone past max, I was expecting loads of crap to come out when I drained the housing but it was clear as anything.

Is it the same as this one?

I alwaysused to get supplied the wrong one, presumably for later models. A sealed 'brass' cannister with different hose outlets to mine.

Always save the box tops now and take them to the supplier for him to order the correct filters.

If it is really reluctant to open then some heat from a hairdryer might loosen it a bit.

My wife's 807 (same 16V engine as your C8) and my Xsara (8V) both have the same filter with 3 pipes to the top as you describe. It unscrews the same as the one in the picture above though. Never seen any max or min markings, and I don't know why they would be any on a fuel filter so that part of your description has confused me.

It might not be obvious if you haven't done it before but only the ribbed collar unscrews (not the pipe connections). I mention this just in case you tried to unscrew the whole of the top by twisting on the pipe connections, which won't work.
You can change the element without actually disconnecting the pipes, although I always do. I also use a set of oil filter pliers to undo, and hand tighten back up.

As I understand it, draining the housing is not done to get rid of dirty fuel, it is to get rid of any water (which being heavier than diesel collects there).

Looking at this thread , searching for others and videos on youtube I cannot figure out how to get off those hoses without breaking the clips.
I'm aware that my filter housing is quite different but if anyone can help I'd appreciate it - thanks!

The clips usually push into the connectors, which (because of the internal design) release the latch that holds it in place.

tried pushing down by hand - here's hopefully a better pic - there's a triangular plastic but in the middle. The filter housing is by Mann + Hummel if that's any help.

Ok this guy shows how to do it - I need to hook the middle UP and simultaneously push DOWN to release (!?!).

So one final question - the bleed screw at the top there - what is the correct procedure in order to remove any air ? Is it :
Unscrew the bleed screw slightly or completely
Use the hand pump to feed fuel back into the system until it expels any air from the top (i.e. diesel comes out the top) ?

Thx

Fuel pickup connections
Fuel pickup connections
If it's like these on top of the fuel pickup, then the centre triangular tab pulls up and clicks into place. Like so:
Centre section pulled up/out
Centre section pulled up/out
Then you only have to push down the outer bits. Still awkward!

Thanks a lot Matt - yup I bought some hook tools to pull those things out without damaging them.
About the other question could you please share your view/expertise ? :

The black plastic bleed screw at the top there (see my pic) - what is the correct procedure in order to remove any air ? Is it :
1) Unscrew the bleed screw slightly or completely
2) Use the hand pump to feed fuel back into the system until it expels any air from the top (i.e. diesel comes out the top) ?

Sorry I am not best placed to help you there - I've only experience of 1.6 DV6 and my 2.2 DW12 HDi engines - both of which have fuel filters which are a sealed unit, pipe connections on top, so haven't had the joys of the battles described above.

Actually, scrub all that I was getting mixed up with the other pictures above! I've just realised you're asking me about a similar looking sealed unit. On the 2.2 the screw at the top is actually the drain screw - unscrewing it uncovers a hole in the bottom allowing water settled at the bottom to be drained off. I don't think it has any air bleeding function. Also it's retained so doesn't remove completely.

Those hook tools come in for all sorts of tasks, a good investment :)

Looking at your pictures again. Your bleed screw looks a little different to the 2.2 so I may be giving you poor advice there.

Hose connections look to be a male and female of the same thing. In any case they are awkward sods, just keep rotating, twisting and pulling by hand, it should let go. It is possible to prise but I am nervous given all is fairly brittle plastic.
