Gear shift

Hi All,

Just recently my gearshift has become very stiff,there is no problem engaging the gears and it engages all gears and runs fine.
Is there a problem with the gear linkages.

Well, Gracie popped her gear selector linkage about a month ago, but I couldn't say if the gears had got stiffer in that time (I have only had her for around 15,000 miles). I did, however, change the gearbox oil within a couple of months getting her. The gear selector linkage is still available (for the BE3 gearbox), part number 2452 74.

Hi Kenny,

Our Xantia estate has a tube in which a ball shaped rubber part of the gear selector linkage moves. Sorry I don’t know the technical name or exact function.
If you follow the linkages either over the top of the passenger side of the engine or from under the passenger front wheel arch, full right hand lock, you should see it.
If the ball/tube arrangement dries out the gear selection will feel awkward, so a spray of a lubricant of your choice into the short tube will restore the gear selection feel. Whilst on the subject some grease on the selector rod end cups should also improve the feel of the gear change.

(I recall a problem where an FCF member visited Austria in winter and the above part iced up and restricted gear selection until the problem was identified)

I will have a look at that ball and tube arrangement later this week i have couple of small jobs to do on her.

I wouldn't put grease on it as collect's crap and wear's out but a good silicone spray if your stuck ive a couple of linkages here still i think as never got round to changing mine as wired it up when end fell out
