Xantia running for another year

Post by KennyW »

Just a quickie, got the old girl through another MOT, had to fit new front discs and pads. I knew they needed done.
Interestingly the brake efficiency again was low but a pass.

I must try and find out why :?:

Paul,

I'm planning to do a hydraflush soon but the LHM is new fluid and it was bled 2 twice prior to MOT. I even made sure I bled it for longer than necessary and topped up on a regular basis, I think i used about 2 litres of new fluid. After my efforts with the rear cylinder I added new fluid so it has almost a complete change the fluid is lovely and green when bleeding now.

I replaced the FOS hand brake cable as I thought it was sticking and was showing signs of wear. But on removal it was working okay just a bit tattie.

The failure was RBT service brake efficiency and RBT parking braking efficiency.

This has been the problem for the last 3 years and I have never got to the bottom of it.

I'm considering renewing the piston seals on the rear brakes.

But first I will do the hydraflush.

If anybody has any thoughts or ideas re this, please post them.

Kenny

Hello Kenny,
I heard from someone an interesting idea...When I asked why I hear a "pufff" sound when I push harder the brake pedal.
Because at xantia brake pump is actually a brake doser, it release pressure to the calipers.
The "pufff" sound appears when the doser have large losses on the return....and I think this is the reason for brake efficiency.
I suppose that if the doser have large losses on the return, the pressure to the calipers is lower...

Well spent this morning battling with the lower ball joints, I couldn't secure the hub well enough to stop it turning so had to remove hub from car and will be taking both to my MOT man to heat, loosen and refit the new ones. Tyres on route to make it all spick and span for holiday to Helmsdale with my elderly parents. I don't know how long the old man is going to go for as he is 87 years young already :-D. Still , My misses and me are going enjoy the time with both my parents as she lost her's several years back.

Still to look at brake issue but unfortunately the commonwealth games (CWG) are getting in the road require car to travel all round the central belt.

I think that's sensible to take them to your local to be swapped Kenny. We here at Team WFA occasionally struggle with them and we have the kit, most importantly a big vice to hold the hub and a five foot breaker bar!!!

Please ask him to take care if he decides to play the hot spanner around them as it can wreck the wheel bearings by melting the grease out of them. The last thing you want is to have nice new swivels fitted and then have to do the job all over again to replace wheel bearings...

Jim,

Fortunately, I've had to do this before and aware of the perils of overheating :) .

Job done this morning,no problems and new fitted but guess what i managed to knock out my drive shaft and have nicked the drive shaft oil seal and there is very slight leak. So I'll have to do all over again but the drip is only 1 per hour at the moment.

It's so easy to do Kenny  Been there myself so I join you in deep commiseration

I had to have one side of my Active front suspension apart three times to finally solve an odd rattle and by the third time it was getting easy. At ;least you know everything will come apart OK.

Can someone confirm the oil seal number from service Citroen as i can't find it yet.

Thanks for the commiserations Jim it just typical that it would happen and I've also been thinking about changing the ABS ring its a bit rusty or just change the outer CV joint. Since the shaft has to come out might as well do the lot at once.

Kenny

PS I've found the numbers offside 3121 46 and nearside 3121 44.

I did a balljoint last year. I have the proper tool but had to use a hammer and chisel. I tightened it slightly first and then it came loose pretty easily.

Congratulations on the MOT pass mine passed yesterday too.
