C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
So i have had my 2004 facelift C5 a year and half now, its up to 75k and runs strong, im slowly going through and improving replacing parts, i need a steering rack soon but i am hoping to get it to feb / mot time to do it - its not bad just has play.
anyways im thinking the cars 10 years old now and getting on in the millage department i am wondering if i should be worried about changing the belt ? do they go 'ping / bang' often ?? it is prob old enough i should do it ? but the millage is not massive.
what experience have you had ?
kind regards
Ant

Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
ok thanks. so millage wise im half way there. that gives me some le-way
Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
Not much leeway, as you are on the 10 year mark. The materials that go into making the belt age and perish, much like tyres, bushes, and so on regardless of actual usage. I would be looking at sooner rather than later if the car is a keeper, if its a run to destruction, then just keep running
There is rarely any warning a belt is going to fail, and when they do its usually an engine wrecking thing:( Personally I would not only change the belt, but all the idlers, tensioners, and if driven by the cam belt, the water pump too. I would do it before the steering rack, it would be a major disappointment to spend pounds and hours on that, then a week later need a replacement engine.

yeah thats true ! just need to work out if im going to do it, or give it to a garage itl cost more but with something goes wrong ill have something to fall back on. I have done this job before on other cars, is there anything different with this one ? anything complicated ?

What engine is it? Interval varies by engine, but at 10 years, I would be thinking about changing it regardless of recommendation!

Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
If it’s the 16 valve HDI then my handbook says 100k miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
I just changed mine on the V6. It's 12 years old but only 28k miles. I have to say that there seemed to be no sign of wear or perishing on the old belt but better safe than sorry. Heard too many stories of snapped belts and the mess they make. If it went it would effectively write the car off which would be a big shame, especially as like me you are spending a bit to get it up to scratch.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
One of my regulars has just bought a Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.0 Td and when he bought it in for me to admire, to my surprise, there was the PSA 2.0HDI under the bonnet.
Timing belt is going to be an absolute doddle, sticking out the front, with loads of room between it and the radiator and no mounting to remove!
I must check what the change interval is, according to Suzuki. I'm guessing they won't be suggesting 10 years...
I wonder will my new Lexia talk to it???
Probably not.
Interestingly, it has the same auxiliary belt tensioner, with the same weakness, even though it's much higher up and should be better protected.

Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
Thanks for that.
Only of use if the customer finds it and decides to trust it, though.
I'll be needing a paper document with a Suzuki flag on it, before I make any promises about change intervals.
I've already given my standard advice... Change it now and at least you know when to calculate the next one from!
The auxiliary belt tensioner is noisy and not running true, so if he doesn't change that soon he may experience the 406 trick of dismounting the timing belt by shredding the fan belt into it!
Funny, I haven't heard of this in relation to Citroens, though it may simply be that I never see any, so haven't been paying attention!

Fair enough, but at least it's a starting point.sparksie wrote:Thanks for that.

Re: C5 cambelt ~ when to do ?
The autel diagnostic tool with psa software will talk to the Suzuki as a Peugeot 806 with the 16 valve or 406 if it has the 8 valve engine. Don't know about the lexia though. The 2.0L 8 valve was fitted from about 2000 to 2002. Then they used the 16 valve up to 2006. All these GVs with the Peugeot engine carry an immobiliser fault code. Seems to be a bug from the conversion process.
