Post by C8Charlie »

It is exactly the same engine as mine was taken from a C5, it is the 4HX but it was torn down to bare engine and everything off my 4HW was placed on it and everything went on exactly the same way it came off so no hidden extras!

Could I trouble you to take some photos for me in the daylight tomorrow please Wayne? from left to right as I have a few brackets to hand and no clue as to where they go.

Also, I think that the cables will be more visible, if it's not too much bother please?

Many thanks again!

maybe as you say this wagon has every add on conceivable, the extra wire could be a supply to the add on's/extra equipment, which picks its currect up from the live feed on the alternator,

can you test which of the two connectors is live whist they are both disconnected but the battery hooked up,

this one will certainly go to the alternator

Have you swapped over the cables and put the one with the white mark on to the alternator?

Looking at that picture suggests to me that the one you have connected to the alternator is the direct from battery positive wire, the one in the red circle should also be connected to that terminal and is to pick up the power from there to supply other services.

On my 2.0 litre C5 that pick up is made, not from the alternator end but picks up directly from the battery positive connector, it gets the same result but is probably just some minor convenience when they designed the loom, maybe to save a couple of inches of copper cable.

Thanks for that, I too think it goes there and that the 2 should be on as I am having a few issues with it disconnected, electrics playing up etc!!

I don't have a clue as my "trusty" mechanic (whom I do not speak to now he landed me with this mess) took it all off, I have just been playing a guessing game but as per my previous post, I will update accordingly to let you guys know how I got on!

Thanks again for all your help, very much appreciated, shame we don't all live close to each other as I'd take you all out for a cold one! :-D

That makes sense, especially as the battery on the C8 isn't in the engine compartment, it is under the floor just inside the drives door.

I know, but sometimes the french have a misconstrued conception of what "simple" means ... unfortunately!

I must say though, the car did go back together quite easily, it has been a pleasure to work on up until now!

I just hope I've plugged everything back in as it should be!!

Hopefully, No news is good news.

But, (and I don't want to take this too far off topic) the pictures of your engine look like it's just left the factory, compared to ours. I can only presume you have some sort of instagram 'make my engine bay look clean' filter on your camera :-D

Well, its been an interesting day to say the least!

Firstly, the cable was for the alternator! That problem solved!
Secondly, a coolant leak whilst starting it! NOT GOOD!!
Thirdly, dead battery!! AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I have left the battery charge overnight as it was dead as a dodo!!!
Tomorrow morning I will carry on as she will have to go for her MOT!!! Not going to happen I think but I am an optimistic one!!

I thank you all for your concern and help, a thousand pardons for my absence but I have been covered in 10 year old grit, grime and new coolant until 10pm!!! :-)
