there are not usually any earth connectors/wires going directly to the alternator and starter, as the engine earth usually attaches to the gear box casing,

the alt and starter earth through there mountings directly to the engine block,

the starter
usually has 1 and sometimes 2 low tension wires going to the small terminal on the solenoid and 1 heavy ( thick ) permanent live to the large pole on the starter motor,

i have seen a case were someone had re/wired there starter and had no engine cranking,

which turned out they had put the heavy ( thick ) permanent live to the wrong large pole/post of the starter motor,

there are two large poles/posts on the starter its self ( other than the solenoid )
one has a heavy braided strap going into the motor the other is the one you connect the heavy permanent live feed to,

the alternator
usually has a thick'ish wire permanent live to the pole/post held in place by a 10mm nut ( spanner size ) and a plug in plug connector

Thanks for that, I have somehow messed up the whole connection, I have 2 thick wires on each, that's not good!!!

Gibbo2286 pointed out a few things and has located the earth on the gearbox for me, I do however have a slight dilemma as I have mentioned above, there are 2 thick cables going to the alternator as well as the clip.

Thanks again
Charlie

are the two thick cables at the alternator separate eyelets or are they joined/crimped together with one eyelet,

the usually one at the alternator should be permanent live straight from the positive battery cable

They are 2 separate eyelets

So, on that basis I have an eyelet but no knowledge of where it should go nor reference but just for clarity purposes, it is close to the alternator, I am on my way over to the car now so I shall take pictures of the connector and the one dangling down on the underneath of the car!

Thanks again guys!

Sorry for turning up late to the party, but I have a 2.0 '807 (which I assume is going to be similar) sat outside if I can help in any way.
I've just had a quick look at the alternator and starter wires and with all the front of the car in place, and the intercooler pipes and things in the way it isn't easy to see. There does only appear to be one large cable to the starter though. I'm busy until about 8pm now but after that I can take photos of anything accessible on ours if you want.

OK, Electrics on! and I also I found out what the cable dangling down the back was, Auxiliary heaters for the inside of the cab, the connection port was disconnected and hiding in a heat resistant sleeve, job done!

All I have to do now is find this one it's place even though it does seem to want to go on the alternator for some reason!

Hi Miked,

Thanks for the offer mate, that would be incredibly handy!!! is yours as visible as mine (the photo above)?

That one cable seems to spell alternator all over it but then again, it could be an earth or god knows to be honest!!!

Any help would be more than suffice!

Thanks again!

Hell no. I could just about see that terminal on top of the alternator, and I think it had a 'squashy' cable to it, rather like the one you have swinging free. I'll have another look now.

Yep. On our's, that terminal has 2 wires to it. Hang fire and I will add the pictures..

I noticed a bit of yellow showing on your photo.

I don't know what you will make of those, I came across a little yellow wire which confused me until I realised it just routed round the main terminal and ended up at the plug. (last picture)

Excellent, thanks mate, that's put more than my mind at rest, it's one of those things, it looks like it should go there and there's nothing else that it can go on but I don't want to blow my car up!!! lol!!

Not sure you can see much, could only see one earth cable while just looking.

The one you have hanging down looks like the alt as it has a white mark on like mine does. The alt wiring goes across the front of the engine into some trunking, you can see the blue wire following the same path.

The only other cable i could see was one to the starter (tried to take pic, last one), could not see another but it is dark.

Wow, I can definitely say that I am now confused! I can see on the 2.0 that Miked has put up has 2 connectors, what model is yours Wayne? I have the CC which has every conceivable extra known to citroen, I was even expecting Hulk Hogan to pop his head up when I opened the bonnet!!

What I can say now is that the electrics are playing silly games, the main screen on the Satnav doesn't come on, the central locking only locks on the passenger side, the alarm seems to work even though I can't say I even saw one on there, and all this needs to be figured out by tomorrow for a wed MOT!!! Pushing it to say the least but persistence shall prevail, I will stay up all night tomorrow and finish her, mark my words!!

Many thanks indeed for all your help so far, Mike nearly cleared it up for me but then Wayne came to only bring my world down again! ;-)

All joking aside, many many thanks for going out of your way, much appreciated!

Also, I have one cable going into the starter, so I might have that one wrong? Oh my, I think I need to visit a Citroen Dealership and hope they have a 2.2 there for me to pop my head under the bonnet!
