Had the same happen the other year, also whilst in France. I'd replaced the starter a year or so previously with a cheapie so although that in itself was a waste of time I knew no need for panic when it failed, as Aramsay said quite an easy job, took an oaf like me all of twenty mins. Pricey there though. Gunge on the solenoid too.
So as you can see, I can only agree with previous comments re the motors. France doesn't like 2.2's coming home and extracts its revenge on your starters..........
