Been Given A Xantia Estate HDI

Post by harryjoe »

Hi Guys.

I'm back again on the french scene after a few yrs away since having the XM and a 405 a few months back.

I have now been given a 2000 Xantia HDI Estate (Pics will follow) very nice it is too, but it has recently had new disc's and pads, but now the abs seems to cut in at low speed ie ; below 30 mph! when the ABS light is lit up on the dash the brakes work perfectly.

Now my answer is that - after having new pads etc does the system need bleeding? inc the ABS or does it sound like the ABS pump or module is naff

Any ideas ??

You lucky b****r.

I would bleed the brakes each time any major work was done on them.

I would check the reluctor rings on the front drive shafts. If they crack (they do, when rust builds up on the drive shaft) they can spin at different speeds, which confuses the ABS to the point it takes itself off line (which then puts the ABS light on). Gracies' ABS played up when the rings has cracked, but the ABS got confused at motorway speeds.

There is a SERIOUS downside to the problem YOU have. While the ABS is sussing things out (takes a few seconds) the brakes don't work (well, the handbrake does). If this happens when you need to stop in a hurry you are not going to like it! There is a temporary way to prevent this happening, but it is one that is frowned upon; remove the fuse for the ABS. The reason people don't like suggesting it is that if you have an accident that the ABS might have prevented then court actions may happen. Personably I feel that unreliable ABS is more dangerous than disabled ABS.

What happens with your ABS system?

Sounds like the reluctor rings on the driveshaft are either filthy or broken. This tricks the ABS into activating. It's a most disconcerting feeling. My HDI did this, a friend I lent it to didn't expect it and ran into the back of someone. Someone he was following from an arranged meeting point to buy their car off them. In my car. My car I'd already sold to CitroJim....

It's therefore advisable to get it fixed :-)

Thanks for the replies Guys.

I will check the rings tomorrow, yes when applying the brakes when the light is not on it feels as if its not going to stop !!!
I will take pics tomorrow for the car.

A work mate who has had it for 11 yrs wanted a new car and said to me find me a new car with low mileage, she said the Xantia is mine, 110k and in lovley condition.

I have now given my Saab 9-5 est the the misses I just love the Xantia.

Try getting hold of Paul (citroenxm). He may have alloys for a Xantia, and he should know the specs.

AAAAH Nigel how the hell are you bud

theres no need/reason for the brakes to require bleeding after fitting discs and pads, as usually the fluid side of the system has not been not been opened,

i agree with the reluctor rings either being cracked or clogged up with dirt, grease or rusty

As far as court actions go on ABS fuse removal?.........easy, just blow the fuse, then put it back in till you get fixed.

It's hard to argue with the fiendish cleverness of your suggestion lexi...

Having also experienced intermittent loss of brakes due to faulty ABS that nearly caused me to run into someone in front of me at low speed, I too would disable the ABS as a stop gap measure until the problem was sorted. And drive a bit more conservatively!

Now THAT is a good way around that problem, but we had better stop 'talking' about it before somebody cottons on!

Can anyone point me to a single instance of a court case for something like this?

It would be difficult to prove liability, that's for sure.

Lucky bloke!

I guess that sets a new benchmark low for HDi estate values -ie 'Pleased to be given it'

Can't be long now before they reach 'I'd be annoyed if i found one'!

Still, those of us who appreciate such things will continue not to care... I've just spent several hundred quid having every hydraulic pipe replaced after two annoying pipe bursts.. just because I didn't want to scrap a good car I've owned from new for want of a few pipes! I still use it most days in preference to my Discovery 3!

Its an addiction, really, this Xantia thing!
