wet dog.

Post by boristhespie »

Owner of car clearly had dog. Big dog. The twent three tree freshners have worn off and I found hairy mould from dog slaver and a tonne of hair I cannot remove from seat edges with sticky paper or hoover. The car frankly stinks. I used saome pet spray for car frae Pets at Home but does anyone have any nifty trick I could use to get rid of the whiff?

You might want to try using a citrus based cleaner. My Mother uses an orange based hand-wash when she has got diesel on her hands. It shifts the smell of diesel (although it leaves the smell of oranges).

There are specialist valeters who have the equipment to remove pet hairs and to sterilize the car interior but they ain't cheap. I think autoglym do sterilizing stuff for car interiors, bit if the dog hair is still there, the pong will probably return when you get your annual warm day in Angus. ;-). I think Prestige, in Aberdeen do a mobile service, but as a last resort, you could phone round for prices for interior only. Nothing worse than a smelly car for a long journey.

The ones David Hallworth used sounded extremely good and may do specialised cleaning like that.

If you have cloth seats, you might even need to have them steam cleaned

Get it properly valeted by the pros. In the end it won't cost you much more than all the potions and elbow grease you'd use yourself. They have specialist sprays and foams to get rid of horrors like this.

I had a Saab 900 T16 about 10 years ago that had an interior that had never been cleaned in 20 years. It was disgusting, stinking, mould, pet hair ground in dirt. Awful. Valeter had it almost like new in a couple of hours. Normally I wouldn't have bothered but it took us 6 months to build that car and the interior was perfect.. but dirty.

Many years ago we bought a Triumph 2000 Estate because there was no way our Labrador was going to be allowed to travel in my new company car.

The Triumph had one previous owner from new who had always allowed his retrievers to sit on a rug on the back seat as well as in the boot. Seat was filthy and stank of old dog. Professional valeting with wet vacuum shampoo-er had the seats and carpets looking like new and smelling of nothing much except a faint fragrance. When the car started to permanently smell of (our) dog later, we just had the boot carpet shampooed as she was only allowed in the boot.

basically if there has been a dog int he car you'll need to do a Full on Deep clean and Antibacterial sterilizing of the interior, (this can be done with a proper machine that sprays a mist/fog into the car and fills the cabin then disperses into the fabrics, - the cheap £30 efforts are a Mask not a fix!!)
your best bet if you want to do it your self will be to strip out the interior, and plastic trims as like smokers cars, the dog hair gets in behind them, clean out what you can and use an anti bac spray on all the panels inside and out, same with carpets, if you can lift them and spray in under that will help as the odor will soak into All of it!
its not a quick process, but to get it done properly is the best way!!

we had at the garage a Maroon / Red metallic Nissan Primera estate, Full beige leather trim, lovely car, except for the previous owners had a wolf hound in the back! from the back seats backwards it was Grey/black with hair! Full strip out, and with all the proper kit it took me over 2 days to go through it and remove the hair! - went through 3 proper trade pet hair removal brushes!! Nasty job but rewarding in the end!!
After All, I am the Cornish one!

I had this problem with my last XM estate the smell hung about for years until one day I cut down a eucalyptus tree and left the logs in the car for a few days, smell has practically gone now - I know its a bit drastic, but it works.

Peter's suggestion reminds me of a thread on here several years ago; several people suggested something similarly unlikely left in the car for several days as an amazingly effective natural deoderiser, but for the life of me I can't remember what is was.

Perhaps someone else has a better memory than me. :?

For those who remember a cat got locked in my last c5 and had pissed and pooped in it. I tried upteen different potions as well as a valeter using a specialist machine in it and I never got the smell away. I hope you have more success than I had. Or look for a leather upgrade but u will need to beat me to it!

Yep, my 406 was a filthy, stinky dog mobile, hair everywhere, everything chewed and coated with slobber residue. I took all the seats out along with the centre console. Borrowed the parents Vax and gave it all a thorough going over with lots of wash solution (and also replaced the steering wheel, gear knob and a seat belt as these had mostly been eaten). It doesn't actually take that long especially considering the amount of time you spend contorting to reach down the sides of seats and other areas otherwise.

Another possibility is simple solution and enzyme based spray which the enzyme'eats' the organic odours.

I've used it for years having 4 dogs and 2 kids, between wet dogs and sick kids it appears to work. Any pets shop sells it.
