water pump weeping

Post by tj46 »

hi all, ive just bought a 2nd car for my wife, but soon noticed that there is a slight leak which seems to be comeing from the bottom of the water pump casing theres like a brown plug on the bottom of the casing and it drips from there, the pump has gone as can hear the bearing rattleing, my question is do i need to replace the complete pump casing as ive looked and it seems to come in two parts

or

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAPCO-Water-P ... 2c822d276d" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

is it leaking from the bottom just because the pump has failed, it also gets very hot ! all radiator pipes get hot as does radiator until the point where the pipes go to expansion tank then it all gos cold, the water in expansion stays cold and when run for for a while taking the cap of the tank there is no pressure at all, the dash temperature stays at 2 bars, i have googled the problem and a few things came up, the water pump is failing which i know it has and or head gasket is also failing, any advice would be great as ive took it of the road until i can get it sorted for her but dont want to change water pump to find head gasket has gone, thanks tom

Hi there..

I assume 1.4 petrol.. water pumps are not seperable. They are a single unit and can only be changed as one.

driven by the timing belt too its highly recommended while your in there to do the belt and tensioner rollers too. Its all done then and can be left for another 80k..

The failed water pump (a common problem) might have caused the head gasket to fail too. I completely agree with CitroenXm about doing the cam belt and tensioners while you're at it. I'd change the water pump and hope the head gasket was OK unless there's any indication that the head gasket had gone. It's vitally important to refill the cooling system with the correct anti-freeze mixture, use rainwater (or other soft water) for choice.

thanks for the replys, i have now changed the water pump, belts and tensioners and all seems fine now, heater is gettting nice and hot and expansion tanks is now getting hot which i assume is how it should be, old water pump was not spinning looks like the shaft had broke, will keep an eye on it now for a few days to make sure it all stays the same
