LHM brake seals

LHM brake seals
In an effort of looking at increased braking performance im wondering if normal Brake Fluid Compliant brake seals would last against LHM, or if they need to be specially rated?
Just trying to see if fitting other calipers would be an option, IE twin pot or 4 pots up front... Downside would be it would need parking in gear all the time! lol

No, the LHM would probably see them off. What are you trying to upgrade the brakes on?

Re: LHM brake seals
I wonder if it might be worth getting the front brakes from a V6, and the rear brakes of an estate Xantia? Mind you, I wonder what the ABS system would make of that?

Re: LHM brake seals
The size of the discs and callipers will have no bearing on the ABS system as it counts the teeth on the drive shaft joint at the front and the hub at the rear. Unless you're suggesting replacing the rear arms and hubs completely ?
I wouldn't bother changing the rear brakes, a Xantia V6 hatch or Activa hatch still has the standard size rear brakes, the majority of the braking is done at the front. Its the rear brakes job to make sure the suspension doesn't lift at the back under braking and keep the car pulled straight so it doesn't fish tale, not to do the real work.
Upgrading to the V6 front discs pad and callipers would be a worthwhile upgrade - they really are a lot better.

I thought a Xantia estate had bigger rear brakes?

It does, but that doesn't mean the arm or reluctor ring on the hub is any different. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.Hell Razor5543 wrote:I thought a Xantia estate had bigger rear brakes?
My point was all hatches share the same brakes at the rear - it's the fronts that are upgraded on the higher performance models.

Re: LHM brake seals
The reason I suggested changing both front and rear brakes was that the OP wanted to improve braking performance. Fitting bigger, better brakes all round could help and, being ones from various Xantias would overcome the LHM issues.

Re: LHM brake seals
Unless you're carrying heavy loads in the back all the time larger rear brakes won't make any difference as the load balancing system already has to limit the rear brake pressure a lot to prevent the rear wheels locking too easily. (Ignoring ABS for the moment)
That's why only the estate has larger rear brakes, because only it is expected to carry the loads (including towing) that would allow bigger rear brakes to be utilised. If you want to improve the braking performance for a lightly loaded car better front brakes is the only thing that will make a real difference.

Re: LHM brake seals
As the front has the most unsprung weight in the vehicle by a huge margin it places a large demand on the brakes.
Its for a 2.0 TCT vehicle and was thinking something like Brembo 4 pots up front as they are in plentiful supply and the aftermarket pads for them are plentiful, only bind would be the discs and carriers.
If V6 ones are the way to go I'm kicking myself now!! I sold the whole front end strut lot I got to Steve earlier in the year to keep his V6 going
The rears I will leave as is other than maybe removing the calliper and cleaning their mating face and mount face and inserting a piece of baking paper to stop their normal issue ever coming back.
I'm going to look at better discs as well and maybe a small ducting to the back of the discs to help with cooling, as i know they dont warp to often compared to other cars i have driven but better cooling is better for fast road pads and discs anyway

Re: LHM brake seals
Well sourced some calipers.
Also found some semi decent pads but dimpled and grooved discs. Not too pricey mind but not too bad really as I have spent a lot of money on discs and pads in the past so £130 isn't too bad.

Re: LHM brake seals
Seriously, what will you do for a parking brake?
Re: LHM brake seals
I'd use bricks if I did the other option
Brake caliper repair kits are £15 and include all seals so going to get them sorted as need to be ordered in.
I would like twin pistons but no option for that unless they are fitted to a c5 maybe...

Ah - I thought you'd found some Brembos!
Re: LHM brake seals
Seriously, the 288mm brakes from the v6/hdi 110/late activa are more than enough. the 283 brakes are a bit pants but i changed over to the 288 setup and my god it's a big improvement
