101 uses for a Xantia. No. 102 - pressing suspension bushes

How to press rear bush onto front lower wishbone on E36 BMW 3-series

Image

Take one Citroen Xantia (we used a 2 litre Hdi, but other models may suffice).
Start engine.
Set suspension to 'high' and wait for car to attain its requested height.
Jam wishbone under towing bracket (see picture) with rear bush housing on ground. (Ensure bush is rotationally correct, cos you won't easily move it afterwards. Also, a little washing-up liquid can be applied to the hole in the bush to ease the... you know that, anyway).
Set suspension to 'normal'.
Wait a few seconds.
Jam wishbone under towing bracket again (it fell out because the front of the car drops first, and the rear rises up a little as it rotates around the rear axle).
Watch with satisfaction as wishbone is pushed into its bush.
Check that the bush is fully inserted. You may need to set the suspension control to 'low' to complete the task. Set the suspension to a higher level to remove the wishbone from the press.
Set the suspension to 'normal' and allow it to settle before switching off the engine.

Voila!

Note that the above procedure can be followed even if the car is on a SORN.
All appropriate health and safety checks and precautions should be applied.
The procedure is offered for consideration only.
