C5 V6 Accelerator, is it cable or electronic?

Post by Quackers »

Got a 3.0i V6 C5, 2001 Reg, the pedal is almost at the floor, so it feels more like an off switch, and it really does not feel that powerful on acceleration , i can floor it when at a roundabout and the car hardly moves then a second later more power appears but still not enough to push you back in the seats as would be expected from that engine.

Does it sound like it just has a slack accelerator cable or are they electronic on this car?

service.citroen shows both types. Does sound like the cable is away, have a look round the back of the air box for the serrated adjuster. If you post up the VIN I can check to see if service.citroen knows what is fitted or not.

According to the following page the ES9J4S has a motorised throttle body:

http://www.nairaland.com/973041/peugeot ... 2#21433562" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It does still have a throttle cable, it just goes to a potentiometer instead of the throttle plate.

It's both! Cable operates TPS under bonnet. Stupid really but then it is French..

Inconclusive..... it still lists both types! Have a search under the bonnet to see if there is a cable. If not, then it has an electronic pedal - new one is £110 though...

No promises on this, but what seems to happen a lot on the C5 is that the pedal pulls a cable, which then goes into the engine bay and works an electronic throttle control. There have been a few recent posts where people have complained about the lack of oomph, experienced members have suggested checking this cable (make sure it is tight), and the original poster has got back to say that they had found there was slack in the cable, they tightened it up, and now their car was back to normal.

I cannot help any further, as I have no practical experience of the C5, just what I have read here.

I think service Citroen is telling porkies Richard!

Which engine does it list ? It must be an ES9J4S as the ES9J4 (like mine) was never used in the C5, only in the Xantia.

All ES9J4 have mechanical throttle bodies, and all ES9J4S have motorised throttle bodies...ergo if its an early C5 it must be an ES9J4S and must be a motorised throttle body. (But there is still a throttle cable to a potentiometer mounted in the engine bay somewhere)

Regarding the actual fault I would still check for slack on the cable but failing that it will need a Lexia to monitor the state of the potentiometer and motorised throttle body - it should be fairly easy on a Lexia to see if its opening the throttle properly or not.

I'm assuming that although it shows a cable, it would be connected to a TPS somewhere on the firewall behind the air filter. It does also show just an electronic pedal, but even with the VIN it doesn't know which is fitted :)

Ah I'm with you Richard. The engine is always a motorised throttle body but some cars have a throttle cable to a potentiometer in the engine bay and some just have a potentiometer directly on the throttle pedal ? Maybe related to LHD and RHD ?

No, I think just depended on how many glasses of Vin Rouge the assembler had had at lunch time, and which came to hand first =D>

Yes, left-hand drive cars have the pedal going straight to the sensor, which is actually two moving magnets.

After reading thread this I checked my cable and there was miles of slack under the bonnet. I made some adjustments and the throttle action has improved no end, bit of a pig to get to mind, but worth the effort.

So do tell, if it's hard to get to, where is the potentiometer located ? :)

Even on the 2.0 8v MK1 HDI it's a pig to get to. I can only imagine it's even worse on a V6. On the HDI it's behind the airbox under the fusebox beside the passenger side strut (rhd) and you need to remove at least the airbox to get at it properly, and I think I loosened the fusebox too. In those days I was blessed with strong fingers that don't go numb and I was able to do it one handed with a bit of a fiddle. Now I just have the strong fingers I'd likely break it!
