A colleague of mine has an '03 Picasso, and neither of the electric mirrors work, no adjustment.
I think I've read somewhere that this is a fairly common fault, and difficult to fix.
Any ideas?

Might well be the control panel in the door (which contains an ECU!!). If you get it on Diagbox, it may well be possible to check the mirrors will move from the Lexia, and to see if it is getting the signals from the panel, which may well point the finger. Otherwise susbstitue the panel with a known good one? New panel around £120 IIRC.
