C% Xenon Headlight bulb cost

Post by mickgall »

Hi all
just had a service done at Halfords and a headlight bulb needs replacing. Had a quote of £114. Is that right or are they pulling my pud?

I don't know which exact C5 do you have, the latest uses the D1S Xenon bulb, you can see some of the prices here ... there are cheaper alternatives that go even lower than those prices, but the quality is questionable ...

EDIT: I know a few people who at this point decided to get 2nd hand regular headlamps for their cars, when the Xenon bulbs gave out on the for the first time ... :D

£114 from Halfrauds......I think Citroen dealers aren't that expensive.

I seem to remember buying a pair of xenon bulbs for my C5 a little while ago. Think they were about £50 a pair and have had no trouble with them since and I do around 30k miles a year. I'll try and dig out where I got them and post it here later.

Are you happy to entrust your servicing to them? With hydraulic suspension I would steer clear of anyone that hasn't got specific C5 experience as they can do a lot of damage. I once had an issue with a body shop who, after leaving my lights on drained the battery, then tried to jump start it and blew several fuses. They knew nothing about the C5 electrics and luckily didn't fry the wiring or ECU's.

Citroen:

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT
0000621696 HEADLIGHT LAMP 113.16 GBP 135.79 GBP

Looks like there is only 1 'bulb'?

Powerbulbs have got them from £65 for a 'std' discharge bulb up to £100 for a brighter one - which must be retina searing!!

I would certainly be steering clear of Halfords....

These are the one's I got for my C5 a year ago. Yes, they're cheap and come from China but I've had no problems so far.

If you prefer to go for a named branded set then you should still be able to get a pair for between £60-£80. You should replace as pairs if possible as bulbs do deteriorate over time and ideally they should provide the same light output.

Now that I've got rid of my C5 Exclusive I have my spare xenon bulb to be sold. When I bought it it was around £50. If anybody wants it, it's theres for £25 + £5 P&P (in UK only) or free collection from NE Surrey. See pictures of same:-

Halfords aren't the cheapest for a lot of things, Bulbs and Wiper blades are good examples, main dealers are often cheaper! I mean take tail like bulbs, Halfords charge about £6 for a pair, but you can buy them from a factors for less than £1 each. So it's no surprise xenon bulbs are over priced too.

I only buy stuff at Halfords using my Trade Card. Big discounts using said card. Wipers, bulbs, batteries, usually at least 50% off list price. :)

I got some new Xenons for my C5 off ebay from Taiwan. 2 for £30 plus postage.

On my 2002 C5 they are type D2R, R stands for Reflector. The other version is D2S where S stands for Spot Light (there's a lense infront of the bulb so they work more like a projector).

Be carefull which temperature you get. I tried some 9000k temp and they were very blue but didn't light up the road at night, so, I got some 4300K and they're nice and bright white.
Cheers, Kev
