Advice...Windscreen cleaner

Post by Stickyfinger »

OK, its driving me bonkers !....a residue that I just cannot shift.

It looks like there is wax etc which just will not shift, new Bosch blades, Retardfords Glass polish, 100% screen-wash, Neat Meths, Panel Wipe....ect ect...still not shifting.

Any advice for a decent MAX Cleaner/Polish that does actually work ?

Straight cellulose thinners will shift most things only keep it off the paint.

I have found that anti static foaming cleaner usually gets most stuff off the windscreen. You can get it from Maplins, but I don't know how much it is. Spray it on, wait until the foam has turned back into liquid, and clean off.

The finest grade wire wool will shift it. Trust me it won't scratch your windscreen i've tried it myself.

Electronics grade solvent works a treat for me... Electrolube ULS is an excellent one. Beauty is it's safe on plastic and paint.

Then really do a good job with a damp chamois..

I saw the foam cleaner used on the windscreen of a car that had been parked under a tree for over a year (so you can guess how dirty the car was!!). It took a bit of time for the foam to work, but the car was driven away about half an hour later.

Foam can be excellent. Years ago there was one that worked like magic and was even effective on greasy cookers and ovens. It really did work well.

Then it got banned.

All foam cleaners I've seen since have not been a patch on the banned one.

If the above don't work I'd give it a try with a clay bar and some lube , keep us posted .

Pound shops sell a close equivalent of RS foam cleaner as an alloy wheel cleaner. I've used many cans for cleaning electronic equipment without ill effect. If it doesn't clean your windscreen, you can use it on your wheels!

Vinegar makes a lot of sense as it's a nice dilute acid. Not sure of newspaper though for a windscreen as the ink, especially on the freebies, is oily and might therefore leave the windscreen smeary when the wipers are in use on a damp night...

Even the Daily Torygraph leaves black marks. The best stuff is paper towel - as provided in many public toilets. Kitchen roll that has reasonable wet-strength is a readily-available substitute.

scrumpled up newspaper is good for getting rid of any smears from the toothpaste or vinegar.
