C5 2001 2.0lt HDI - Sticky offside caliper piston

Post by Jeff »

Dear all,

Noticed a few days back a squeal from the offside front wheel. Checked it out and found piston wont return easily. Using wind back tool, moved it in and out number of times, lubricated it but there was no dust cover and build up of dust/crud has caused caliper to pinch. I dont think any matter of winding in and out would release it as the seal is the pinch and the piston too smooth to clean out any crud.

My question is, has anyone popped out the piston...cleaned up the seal and been able to wind back the piston successfully. And if so, any do's and dont's.

Because there was no dust cover and there was another thread on here with refurbed calipers available for £37odd delivered I have ordered one but intend rebuilding the old one, possibly as a spare but also to know next time that I can remedy the niggly problem myself.

Thanks for any advice.

Personally I would of replaced both of the callipers given the known problems/limits of the design.

However, this may help you
