c5 air conditioning not working!

Post by Mattyc1977 »

Hello. I have a 08 plate citroen c5 2.0hdi vtr+. my air con doesn't work and I'm trying to determine is it broken or just need re gassing? I have checked the fuse under the bonnet and that Is OK. The light comes on on dash to say it's on but it doesn't blow cold. In other cars I have had, when air con is switched on, there is a click or a change of noise but there isn't with this car. anyone got any suggestions I can test to find the problem? thanks in advance.

Couldn't say about testing, but when I bought my 2.2l X7 (08) the air-con was showing as all working but no cold air. I'm assuming that your fan is working OK and it's just the air isn't cold.
Luckily, mine was under guarantee from the garage so they took it back and re-gassed it. Nearly two years now and it is icy cold . Can't say I've noticed a click, but theoretically, the revs should drop a fraction, but again, I haven't checked the rev counter as my A/C is always on. I find the car mists up when the A/C is off.

Out of gas most likely - if you can get it on a lexia you can check. On a car this new with not enough gas to allow the AC to start, almost certain there is a leak, and likely to be the condenser - although I recall Lighty saying that there is a pipe that fails on early Mk3 C5s.

Correct Richard, large bore pipe near the engine bulkhead is a common failure on early X7's.

If you go to a reputable place to have it re-gassed, I think they might do a leak/pressure test. Whether it costs extra, I couldn't say. You could ask before booking the car in.

Normally what happens when you take a car in for a re-gas is that they hook it up to the automatic system. This first recovers any remaining refrigerant gas, then it puts a vacuum on for a few minutes (this is the leak test), then (assuming no leaks) it adds the oil (and, possibly, a U/V liquid to help show up any future leaks), and finally the refrigerant gas. The whole process takes about an hour.

When I had Gracies' done last year it cost me about £50, but this included doing the anti-bacterial cleaning cycle.

Just a thought. Is your car showing the correct outside temperature? If it isn't, then the A/C ECU cannot compensate for this, and the A/C doesn't work.

Yes, it is correct, but good suggestion, thanks.
