Timing belt change at 160k or 10 years!?!
That was the recommendation from the local dealer. Was going to replace it at 100k but think I will leave it now for another 20-30k.

160k miles ? Seems unlikely. 160k kilometres maybe!

No need to go back, recommended intervals for the timing belt is 160,000 miles or 10 years now. which would probably be ok if you do mostly motorway work.

Re: Timing belt change at 160k or 10 years!?!
Yes, 160k miles or 10 years is correct. Timing belts are no longer the simple rubber bands they used to be.
Back when I had my MK2 MX-5, there was this discussion on one of the Mazda forums about it. In the US, or perhaps California, they had mandated that timing belts intervals must be a minimum of 100,000 miles. Mazda at the time were recommending 60k for the MX5 1.8. So, they just changed the recommendation. Nothing was changed about the belts, pulleys or tensioners. No massive increase in failures suddenly arose. I think you're either lucky or unlucky with timing belts. I've ran plenty of cars long past the change interval, and had others changed on time. On the only two I ever had break, they broke well before the recommended interval.

Service schedule book says 160,000 mls / 10 years for normal conditions. 120,000 mls / 10 years severe conditions. Severe conditions are:-
1 Use of vehicle mainly in town (door to door delivery/taxi.
2 Use in very hot countries (where temperatures are frequently above 30 C)
3 Use in very cold countries( where temperatures are frequently below -15 C)
4 Driving in a dusty environment.(Building sites)
5 Repeated short journeys (engine cold)
That's from the service book, word for word.
6 Use of non-approved lubricants or poor quality fuels (sulphur content higher than 500ppm)
