To separate fan rotor from heater motor?

Post by John Plum »

Hi,
I need reminding how I once managed to separate the fan rotor assembly from the heater blower body, in order to get at the speed control module.

I know it involves compressing three slotted rubber wedges, but I don't see how that's achieved and dont want to risk damage to the fan.
I've forgotten the trick. I tentatively tried levering with screwdriver....

There's a screw in the centre of the base of the motor housing that you undo, and the fan assembly should just lift out with the motor attached, leaving the housing and the controller board

On this particular one, not so unfortunately.

There are three of these slots in which rubber wedges lie, holding and isolating the fan rotor.

You have to press the three rubber blocks inwards simultaneously, you should then be able to pull the motor out.

I was just going to reply what Peter replied, but I had one of these on my HDi and managed to wiggle the board out without taking the fan out before I learnt the right way. On my earlier car, it had a screw at the bottom.

Well, managed to get it off using two flat blades screwdrivers, working on one wedge at a time; one to lever from under the fan (carefully), one to compress within the slot whilst wiggling to get it moving.
And so, move round to the next, after the wedge is clearly raised beyond its seat.

This I did after dribbling a little soap solution, and holding the unit down on a cloth to help keep it gripped on the workbench. Oh, and removing the power cable terminal to the motor.

I couldn't figure a way to compress all three at once and lever up.
But, it came fairly easily, after the soaking and with firm determination.

Reason for dismantling actually is to try to get some lubrication on it. Not sure now that is possible, with what I have before me. Further dismantling looks like a job for an Indian workshop.

The rotating spindle is visible at its base seat - a simple bush perhaps, I'll see how well lubrication thee works, once I get power on it.

Cheers guys. It's a lonely business without you.
