As subject - what do the oil fetishists recommend these days?

Right question to ask, if you want a dozen different opinions. :twisted:

I've got fully synth Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 in mine.

I tried some semi-synth Mobil Super 2000 10w-40 and I didn't like it. It's the only time I've changed the oil on a car and the engine got noisier instead of quieter... :roll: Which is saying something given how black the oil was that came out. Changed it for the castrol a couple of months later and the engine went back to being quieter again. Not entirely fair comparing a cheaper semi-synth to a fully synth I know, but these are the only two oils I have experience of in this engine.

Also watch the oil filter - a lot of parts lookups will give the wrong filter for the V6 - well not wrong as such, but a smaller filter designed for the smaller Xantia engines. It fits but who knows how well it works or lasts on this engine. The correct filter is about 13mm longer than these smaller types. I used a Purflux LS880A with an OEM part number of 1109.S7 the second time - the first time I ended up with one of the smaller types by mistake.

Mike, every so often Asda do Castrol oil at a low price (well, lower than normal). I will keep my eyes open if you want.

Yes I've seen that as well, but 1109.S7 and 1109.AK (PSA codes) both map to the same Purflux OEM part number (LS880A) from memory. If you look up the engine on the Purflux website it lists the LS880A for the V6 and the smaller LS867B for all other Xantia's.

I went through this process of trying to figure out if I had received the right filter or not here:

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 6&start=45" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Although I can't be 100% sure the end result is that I believe the LS880A is the correct filter, whether its labelled 1109.S7 or 1109.AK. They're just two different applications of the same filter.

Just yesterday got the oil changed, Total 5w40. This topic reminded me that I have to check tomorrow, what brand the oil filter is.
In Finland we have this thing called Reilu Meininki

My V6 XM (2000 W plate with 51k on it) has been running a Mobil1 Fully Synthetic 0w40 since it was 3 days old. The original owner drained it when it was 3 days old and flushed it 3 times in quick succession and put it onto this stuff. It runs beautifully and quietly on it and has done for 52k miles now.

Our 406, 407 and C5 are all running Millers Oils XS-S 10w40 semi synthetic. These have all been using this oil for quite some time now with no adverse effects either.
