Xantia 110bhp HDI takeover Qns

Post by John Plum »

Got hold of a 1999 Xantia HDI 110bhp estate yesterday.

Apart from the usual stuff, which I can handle, I have a couple (three) of questions:

- concerned about exhaust flow in what appears to be original catted item: I have a recent clean straight through system and box on my old 1.9 TD estate. Could this be used? Should I be concerned about this at all?
Turbo boost works, intake pipe expands on revving, but acceleration on road might be better.

- The accelerator pedal seems stiff to operate.

- what's the best option for a spare key - only came with one.

Thanks
John

1.9TD exhaust won't fit - the HDi 110 uses a larger bore up to the rear box. Early cars have a 2-part exhaust, later ones single part, although they are interchangeable. Getting it off the turbo is a mare - I've had mine off twice, and had to cut the bolts both times - might be possible with a C spanner, or a windy gun I guess. Front section is amenable to welding - mine is original at 160k, but has been extensively welded twice!

Acceleration - something wrong there, pedal on mine is light and it goes like a scalded cat! Check that the cable doesn't need adjusting. May need a new cable? Low power with no warning lights can be MAF related - need a Lexia to see what it thinks it is flowing.

Spare key - you need a blank with transponder chip, the immobiliser code, and a Lexia - no other option really.

Thanks for that Richard.
I'll take a closer look at the cable somehow. Maybe by refitting it.
Yes, I think Lexia session will be very useful shortly.

eBay came up with replacement xantia folding fobs with blade blank, but without the transponder or circuit board. I didn't go for that, heeding the warnings I read here.

If it's not impossible to get off, you can have the cable off mine, which is coming off the road tomorrow

Check the cable is adjusted correctly. Easy enough to do - get someone to push the accelerator all the way down, and see how much further you can move the cable on the "throttle" assembly and adjust as necessary by moving the clip on the end of the cable. I had exactly this problem on my HDi, a C5 HDi and the Berlingo HDi. Cables must stretch over the years.

Yeah, must be something to do with they are driven though - I've never adjusted the cable on my Xantia in 110k, and there's no slack...! IIRC you don't need to press the pedal just pull back on the black plastic tube - if it moves without turning the TPS, then it needs adjusting.

Weird isn't it? I know at least two of mine were owned by old folk from new (Red C5, Berlingo) and they were both way out of adjustment.

Cheers for tips on cable adjustment, much appreciated. However I think I ought to take the whole out and examine the inner for fraying, due to heavy operation.
Any tips on that might be useful, as regards routing and re-routing outer, or any non-obvious dismantling, being new to this engine layout.

Yes, Richard, I'd like you're cable a lot. Please let me know when/if available. But you look glum, what happened to her?
Anything you need from my old estate?

Detached and Checked throttle cable for action: it's good and free moving, so is the pedal. That refitting operation is dead easy.
Determined the spring action on the pressure pump, to which the cable attaches, has a heavy spring action. I wonder if they vary in action, or somehow deteriorate.

Had to drill out screw on the air filter housing, and Lo, filthy air filter. I'll go for a spin, expecting better action.

Yep, much better for that on acceleration. Hooray!

What's the clicking pulse I hear when revving - something to do with fuel, eh?

How often does it make the noise John? Is it the accumulator sphere ticking?

Actually Mike, it may be. Short Rapid pulse and then click, every eight seconds
It has a rear Height corrector issue, so this may also cause a little extra pumping when accelerating uphill - cos I also heard it come in then.
