C5 Front Suspension

Post by SwissSPEC »

Driving on Sheffields roads produces a clunking sound from the front of the car, as i don't have much experience of this type of car, is it likely to be:

Drop Link?
Tie Rod?
Ball Joint?
Suspension Arm?
Something else?

If i'm driving on smooth bits of road, no noise at all, there is a slight bit of vibration through the steering though, i assume linked to one of the above, or it may be worn tyres? I've not noticed any extra vibration through the steering when braking, the car also appears to pull slightly to the left.

Any ideas? Or could it be all 4 of the above

The car in question is a 2 litre HDI 110 Estate on a 52 plate with 115k on the clock, so not sure if there is a known weakness for certain parts if they are still orignal bits fitted 12 years ago?

Thanks for reading :)

Yes, I'd suspect the drop links first as I had the same symptoms on my C5 but you should also check the other joints for movement and the strut tops where they are bolted to the inner wing turrets.

Don't know about ones to avoid, but Lemforder (I think I spelt it correctly) is a name that people like.

Moog seem to make decent suspension parts.

i personally steer well clear of that E bunch,

also if the car is pulling one way this is another issue and not the drop links

Malcolm, there may be more than one issue ;) Who knows, i'll need to get it looked at tbh, i haven't got a clue on these motors, i was allright on the BX, i guess my learning curve will be steep, & hopefully not in my pocket, haha...

A lot of C5 stuff is very similar to BX, so you shouldn't find it difficult.
