I seem to remember Citroen were doing deals on clutches and DMF's last year when mine failed. I think they charged me around £600 all in (decided I wasn't up for removing gearbox etc myself, especially as parts were going to be around £500 list). Mine was a 2005 C5 with 180k so probably borderline on whether it was worth doing but decided that as I do 30k a year it would be worth doing. Sometimes you have to think in terms of having an otherwise good car which you know the history of compared to pot luck in buying another one (regardless of age/mileage/warranty). Often worth haggling, even with main dealer, as in my experience they can usually do a deal if it means the difference between making some money and you walking away. After all, they still have to pay for that fancy showroom and expensive mechanics time, even if you walk away!!

The thing that worries me about getting the Cit garage to replace the DMF is that - are they going to replace the old DMF made of papier-mache, watch springs and egg shells with another one made of papier mache, watch springs and egg shells ? The earlier C5 X7 2.0Hdi 138bhp appear to be fitted with a DMF with a part number 0532X7 and the replacement seems to be of the same part number. Will history repeat itself a few 10's of thousand miles down the line with anohter DMF failure, or are the repalcement DMFs of better quality and more up to the job?

The later (post RPO 12774 Sept 2011) 138hp cars were, it would appear, fitted with a DMF part number 96 770 605 80 - but I think the 138hp C5's were actually replaced in the UK in late 2009 to early 2010 with the 160hp version anyway, which had a DMF part number 0532T3 replaced with 96 770 605 80.

I'd be interested to know if there's any reports of 160hp 2.0Hdi C5's with DMF failure, or is it generally only a problem with the 138hp version with a DMF part number 0532X7 ?
Anyone know any more info ? Anyone fancy trawling Service Citroen to see if the part numbers have been updated as I'm running (I think) last years version of DocBackup and that's where I've drawn these part numbers and RPOs from.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

There's a replacement for the later one listed as well - RP 98 009 829 80, this is listed for both the 138 and 160 versions. Change might be small though - I expect both will fit. My feeling is that DMFs are intolerant of heat, so you need to be careful how you drive them (no holding it on the clutch!) for long (ish) life.
