Re: C5 clutch dual mass or single plate?

Post by 411514 »

My understanding, at least in the case of the early C5s, is that the non-DMF 90 BHP model has a dual mass crankshaft pulley, whilst the 110 with the DMF had a single mass crank pulley. Thus, possibly a good compromise for someone retro-fitting a single mass flywheel will be to fit a dual mass crank pulley, although likely this will reduce the cost advantage of the single mass flywheel.

This is what I had on my C5 2001 110 HDi:
They call (7) the 'double damping pulley' and (12) the 'clutch dual flywheel'. Never had either the clutch or the flywheel replaced from new and did over 157k before I changed her. My X7 is now on it's second DMF at 69k

well in 12 years of driving my S2 Xantia with a SMF ( the gear oil was changed at 10K intervals)
I destroyed one gearbox I initially bought the car with a repaired
gearbox the receipts pointed out that the 3rd gear synchromesh had failed at 40K.
so it was on the repaired box when I bought it but as a tow car I couldn't fault it one bit.
at least I could say a replacement box at around £60 plus fitting of around £300 was still cheaper than
a modern DMF clutch kit. I to have pondered this question a lot but as I only do about 100K in 12 years
a new DMF does seem to make a lot of sense.

it is the horror stories of them wearing out at around 60K that terrifies you into thinking about a single mass conversion
and of course the possibility of destroying the DMF with towing.
I have even seen comments online about poor reliability of Valeo DMF's Valeo clutches for Citroens were once considered to be the best,
just like Bendix Brakes.
Not anymore it seems.

Valeo have now produced a different SMF replacement designed for DMF cars with larger springs in the centre of the clutch plate
to absorb more vibration.
It seems to be an admittance of their early failing DMF clutches. The KIT 4P.

They seem to have been fully tested for durability and according to their table are much better than the alternative DMF.

I have done the Valeo single mass KIT4P conversion and runs good on one of my customers 407sw HDI 16V (same engine). (2 years ago) You can hardly feel it it's a single mass flywheel. The car is booked this week for a big maintenance will make a video of the ride if you still aren't convinced.

They all seem to be for the 2.0 HDI 110 or the 1.6 HDI C5s, I've yet to see one for the 2.0 HDI 16V 138 MKII. They don't seem to have one for this model listed in their catalogue or on ofher reseller sites, so if going for one of these, make sure it is for the exact car model and year. It may well fit, but if it is not designed for the right engine and power levels, it could cause premature wear of other components like driveshafts and transmission.

I looked into this for my previous C5 2.0 16V 138 at the time and they did not have one a available then.

The kit 835068 is for a HDI 16V before 12-2005 for a 136hp. The 407sw that is booked this week got chipped I heard just ago. so it's running fine at 179hp on the kit4P. 835069 is for hdi 16v 2005 - now

The DMF is just another marketing thing to drain your wallet.

Just downloaded their latest (2012) catalogue and they do have them now then :-D . Still no listing for the MK III - 2008> 2.0 engines they only have these in 1.6 Engines  I'll keep checking back in case they add this one on. Just had my clutch and DMF done now - so by the time that is due again, they might have them added

Check also Borg+Beck and ADL-Blueprint catalogues. Both have SMF 4-part kits.

Are you sure the borg and beck arent just rebadged sachs clutches? I would rather have a new clutch conversion set than a refurbished one.

For french cars I stick to Valeo as they make the correct fitments for all french cars.

Borg & Beck seem to have gone downhill of late, it's a name I'd always associated with quality but looking at some of their parts now I would say otherwise :/

...and ADL-Blueprint might not extend beyond Jap and F.East cars. Can't get into the their catalogue right now.
Blueprint components are of OEM quality; I've used them for wheel bearings and SMF kit for our RAV4 D4D.

I found a valeo kit online for my 2007mk2 136 16 valve 2.0 hdi. At £257.00 for the SMF conversion but I'm not sure if it is a 4p kit. Don't have access to.the details on my phone but will post up a link later one on proper puter.

Just had a look at valeo tecdoc but, seems 835068 and 835069 are the same? Both should fit then under your car if you have a 2.0 HDI 16V.

I think this is where a lot of people are going wrong if you use conversion tables to convert 136HP to the Metric PS
the answer is 137.8862887 PS
http://www.statman.info/conversions/power.html
PS is the metric measurement of HP used when selling modern clutch kits.
so just saying that no-one does a clutch kit for a 138 doesn't really count if you check the conversion tables.
