c5 2.2 hdi help

Post by Damien »

Hi all looking for some help with my c5 2.2 hdi estate auto, been having usual partical filter errors and going into limp mode for a few weeks , then on friday the revs hit the roof and a load of white/grey smoke came out the exhaust, turned ignition off to stop engine, got it recovered home and started checks, thinking turbo has blown first thing i did was check oil level its about an inch over the max level??? so i've gained some from somewhere not creamy so i'm thinking diesel has entered somewhere, got oil around intercooler at bottom and in air pipes, none in airfilter. decided to drop oil and filter, fill with new oil to correct level, start car and see if level goes up, did this, engine sounds sweet no obvious problems until i revved up. it would seem that when the turbo kicks in around 1400rpm it just goes ballistic, revs off the scale again turned key off to stop. im assuming my turbo is kaput, any help or advice on removal or other cause would be very much appeciated, got to do it myself or its going to the c5 heaven i'm afraid :(
thanks in advance
Damien

its a 2001 , with full history , 150k and i love it

Sounds like diesel runaway, probably an injector has failed & the ecu thinks that its not getting enough fuel, so it pumps tons of it in which is causing the problem. I've seen a mates Astra do this, the amount of white smoke & the fact the engine just revved up without touching the throttle was impressive. When he cut the engine ignition, my god, the knocking sound the engine made was equally impressive. Again the dip stick showed that the oil level was over full & it stunk of diesel :(

Also be aware of the danger of runaway if the oil level gets too high:

I had the same last year with my 2002 C5 2.2 - seals on turbo failed and had turbo runaway. Turning the key to stop the engine had no effect as engine was feeding on the engine oil. Only way to stop it was stall the engine, not easy when running at max revs. Whatever you do not try and re-start the engine. I was able to get the turbo overhauled. You will need to clean out the intercooler as mine had filled with oil. When I checked the oil level it was below minimum.

Reference my earlier message. This is the company that overhauled my turbo. http://www.aceturbo.co.uk/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

thanks psw, dont want to risk starting it up to do a leakoff test, thinking your right about the turbo, did you remove it yourself? i'm thinking i could tilt the engine downwards towards the front, after removing the mounting, to get at it, is this possible ?
Again many thanks to all who have replied and any info advise on removal would be great

Couldn't remove myself, don't have any facilities, entrusted to my local indy garage. Old fashioned garage - auto engineers.

I changed my turbo myself. Was a little difficult but made easier with car on the ramp in the air. Needed a rachet with long extension to reach up back of the engine to the bolts that hold turbo onto the manifold. Will need to remove the driveshaft on drivers side to aid access.

Took me approx 3-4hrs to swap from memory it was 14 months ago.

Drive shaft is easy to remove but be careful to catch the gear oil that leaks out, horrid stuff if you get it on your clothes.

I drained my gearbox as I did not know how much had leaked out and put back in the correct amount which I think was 1.8 litres.
