Whistling Turbo C5-2006 1.6Hdi

Post by Rochy101 »

Well it never rains it pours, It ain't my week or two for cars.
Ok this is the story we went out on a longish round trip of 200+ kms , going there no problem- just on the return. I Start the car and woooosh and whistling of the turbo sounded quiet nice at first but going through the gears it gets annoying and loud, I have checked under the bonnet and there's no great noisy on tick over, Driving no loss of power or warning lights on the dash. I took it to my mechanic friend who made a suggestion about dumping the engine oil and putting in the very best oil possible to see if this will help, I am a little concerned that's its inside the turbo even though no rattles or hissing.
Again Thanks in advance.

The prognosis is not good.... http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=47677" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pop the inlet hose off, and have a feel of the shaft - if there is any play in it then the Turbo is shot. If not, then you might be lucky and get away with removing the filter in the bottom turbo oil feed banjo bolt (for access to which you need to remove the Cat / DPF) - but I suspect that the damage is done.... Could always be a burst hose somewhere, but given this engine's reputation, I fear not.

Checked out the turbo fr play in the shafts and all is good, no play in both sides. But I havent checked out this banjo bolt as could not remember the name of it . Now on the way back from friends garage the bloody Anti polution warning light came on and the car started to struggle, I stopped and had to restart the car and opened the fuel cap for a split second and this seem to clear the ECO mode and i have got home ok , but still a whistling turbo and now engine management light on ..feck a deck. Happy days

Glad to hear the turbo looks good.

For a whistling turbo, I'd look for an air leak on the pressure side - loose or split pipe, hopefully not a stone through the inter-cooler!

The old 1.9 whistled when the small pipe feeding pressure to the pressure compensator on the injection pump split - underneath where it couldn't be seen. The air pressure loss to the engine was negligible, but as the injection pump was 'seeing' no boost pressure, it was under-fuelling massively - something less than the N/A version's 60 bhp.

I had a good look around today ( took off the Dpf -cat cover ) and the only thing was the banjo pipe (feed) has the ability to move left and right and backwards and forwards and yet the top and bottom fixings are very secure- yet no oil loss at tall when under pressure, My tech-mech friend believes the turbo has probs with the bearings inside hence whistling and no obvious signs of play just there seems to be no play at all.
I am ready to buy a new cartridge for the Turbo but in the back of my mind I keep thinking its the pipe. Ahhhh for the love of it I just don't know as £120 this month and some is just a little to far for me.

The feed pipe won't make the turbo whistle, they can do this if one or more blades on the turbo gets damaged, and puts it out of balance.
The feed pipe is supposed to wiggle about, it has a kind of flexible joint, this will be the movement that you can see, the filter that needs removing is in that banjo bolt, it is imperative that you remove it in my opinion, as it will restrict oil flow , and then the turbo will die, assuming it hasn't already.

You did remove the filter from the turbo oil feed banjo before refitting, didn't you???

Probably easier on a C5 than some of the later cars - more room to play with! Rad has to come out on many to get access to remove the DPF.

Hello Richard , It was the first thing I did after dropping the oil. Absolute bugger to remove but happy now done. The car is purring now well for a diesel that is. A BIG THANKYOU to you and all those who passed on such good advise.
