Berlingo Engine Light EGR

Post by Bonzodog »

Hi. The engine management light on my Berlingo (2004 2.0L Hdi owned by me from new 128K miles Maintained and serviced by me for the past 7 years ) comes on and goes off quite regularly and has done for the past 3 months. Local diesel specialist read the codes and replaced the EGR servo don't think he was completely convinced that was the problem (after 5 days I wanted the car back!) the light did however stay off for a few weeks before going back to being on and off for days at a time. Came on again yesterday whilst pulling away from a stop but often just fails to go out after starting the engine once on seems to be alight for 3-5 days. I have removed and examined the EGR valve and it does operate correctly when a vacuum is applied. I have carefully examined all the vacuum pipes from the vacuum pump to EGR servo and the brake servo all seem to be OK and not leaking. What next? I want to test the vac pump which I will but I don't really think that's the problem. There is little difference in performance with light on or off, possibly a bit more "jerky" with light on but quite honestly its difficult to tell. It doesn't really bother me but I assume that it will fail an MOT with the light on. If I buy a cheap code reader will that get me more info, I'm reluctant to take it to the main dealer as it seems to me it's an intermittent fault and I could end up spending lots of money for what could be a cheap fix. I also assume EGR valves fail often judging by the number on eBay.
Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Whereabouts are you located? It'd be really helpful to get it on a Lexia. If you're anywhere near Reading, I can do that for you. I have a Berlingo, same engine, same year. A cheap code reader won't tell you a great deal sadly.

I had a Picasso with a similar issue, turned out that the vac pipe was blocked at the plastic tee on the brake servo pipe

Not perfectly sure but I think the Engine management light can come on if there is a fuel supply issue
have you ever cleaned the tank strainer? I'm sure somebody will be along to correct me on this.

Hi. I have checked carefully the vac pipe especially the "T" its a very small hole that feeds the EGR Servo could make it bigger. Just had a new fuel filter so don't think it's fuel but it is a Citroen anything is possible. I am in Colchester so anybody local with a Lexia kit I'd love a check of the codes for beer tokens.
