Service interval for C5?

Post by osx »

Getting close to 100k. Do I wait for an alert/reminder or should I just book a service?

From memory, I think you have a C5 X7, so I'm assuming diesel. Mine is a 2.2 and the service interval is a ridiculous 18 months(maybe 2 years) or 20,000 miles. If I'm right, you will have a service indicator. When you switch on the ignition, you should get a message saying XXXXXXX miles to next service, or XXXX beyond service miles. Pressing the inner of the three buttons to the right of the steering wheel, behind the wiper stalk will also bring up the service due mileage after the tyre pressure readings. It's kind of useless really, because 2 years or 20,000 miles is too long to have the same oil in your engine, in my humble opinion. Even with todays highly specific engine oils, it's probably a good idea to halve the recommended time and mileage at least.
As regards the belt, I seem to remember 10 years or 112,000 miles, but again, is it worth ruining your engine for the sake of sticking to the manufacturers spec. Remember, that is the OUTSIDE limit, so you should consider getting the belt done at the next service if funds are available.
I'm not 100% sure of the figures, or the exact spec of your car but if it's a 2.0l HDI they won't be a million miles out.

Good advice - Id not leave the same oil in for 20k, 18k killed most Lagunas from Renaults mistake.

12k is LONG enough, and not much more. Same for Cam belts, 100k is a long time, and its best to do them early. Say 80k?

Why are you worrying about the dpf? Do you only do short or town journeys??

Cam belts aren't that bad. If it's the 138 bhp engine the cam belt is literally just that.. crank water pump and exhaust cam.. The inlet cam is driven off a chain inside the rocker cover. The fuel pump is on the end of the cam so it will be timed by the exhaust cam..

I had a main service, cam belt and water pump and M.o.T. all done at the main dealers in Coventry just after getting my 130bhp 2.0l HDi in October last year at 100,000 miles. Including labour and parts it came to £622 inc V.A.T. with service book stamped and a Red, Amber, Green check sheet record of all things checked during the service (brake pad thickness, tyre tread depth, fluid quality and levels etc) and 12 months ticket. I was informed by their service personnel that the Citroen service limit for the C5 X7 was originally 140,000 miles but had been reduced by Citroen to 100,000 miles - no reason given hence me having it done. Water pump was changed as I would guarantee it would fail within a week of the cam belt being done if not done! Also they also said that the next service was a minor one at 110,000 miles (oil and filter change and vehicle check) for £99.99. On checking prices of correct oil and filter and factoring in labour and V.A.T. I didn't think that it was too bad a price and that the service book would be stamped too, keeping up the value of the vehicle with a full service history. This is due in about 3000 miles. From memory I think the cam belt change was circa £350, water pump+coolant - £153 and M.o.T. £40....

It is the 138 bhp engine and I would say 80% of driving is on motorways. Cam belt change seems to be around £300-350 (can I get the parts myself from another source and the dealer do the work?)

Not normally. Dealership will tell you they want to use their parts as they know the quality of them (and can then guarantee their work). If a part you supplied were to fail, who do you chase up? The dealership will say it was a faulty part, the supplier will say it wasn't fitted properly.

They did replace the drop links that I supplied so I may try with the cambelt too. If it is the same part number can't see the reason why they would refuse.

There is a service replacement DPF at a specific mileage. It's not there for life(unfortunately). I can't remember what the mileage is. The 5 series BMW is 112,000 miles. I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar for the C5 X7, but I know one owner who was told by his garage that it would need replacing at 75,000 which seems a bit early.
I don't suppose for one minute that anyone takes any notice of the recommendations, because it a catch all, and of course it all depends on the type of mileage that is done. 100,000 motorway miles would be totally different to urban miles, but the theory is that eventually, the DPF will not be able to dispel the ash resultant from the trapped soot deposits and will not be able to regenerate. That would be the time for it to be replaced, but to put a specific time and/or mileage to it seems pointless.
