xantia ignition switch repacement with switches

Post by romie »

Hey, it looks like I'll have to replace ignition switch with 2 x toggle and 1 x push button switches.
Just wanted to run this by anyone who might have done the same thing :/

Design:
Toggle switch on Grey and Brown connectors.
Push button switch on Black connector.

Operation to start and run car:
First: Short and hold shorted the two Grey connector wires together on Grey connector, (wait for glow plug light to extinguish).
Second: Momentarily short Black connector wires together to turn starter motor over, then release to open circuit the wires again once started.
Third: Short and hold shorted the two Brown connector wires together on Brown connector to engage blower, (if needed).

This sound right?

Cheers, Romie

.. oh no, I see where I went wrong there.

Pin1 on black connector feeds power to everything else.

Little more complicated.
I need to switch power to grey 1 in positions A and M, but off on position D
.............................. grey 2 in positions M and D....

yeah, little bit more thought on this one, maybe three toggle switches and a push button.

Looks like I need to turn one toggle off during ignition to remove power to alternator...ohhh I see.

Apply power to pre heaters and leave on.
Fire starter motor, then remove power.
Apply power to alternator and leave on.

:).. lets try that

At least you can fit one of these modern push button starters - like my 1954 Hillman Minx had. :-D

:) sorted it.

Was as in previous post, although I don't need to short the brown connector to enable the blowers for some reason.
Someone has already taken a wire from the grey connector pin 2, fitted a spade connector and wired to one of the fuse positions in the middle of the passenger fuse box.
I wonder if this was done due to a failed blower switch in the ignition over four years ago and 90,000 miles earlier! :p

Hang-on, I'll go check which fuse position it was shoved into...

So at the moment I'm just using dirty great choc blocks, and I've got to manually screw each wire in.
I'll have to find some appropriate panel mount toggles and a push button from somewhere... maplin I suppose.

..Which modern push button starters is that Peter?
You mean the factory fitted push button, that works when your fob is in proximity to vehicle yeah? :)

aha!
Yes.
I wondered what that fat ol wire was doing there for sooooooooooo long!

Yes, someone has taken power from the pre-heater feed straight to fuse position 20, (blower power fuse)!
That blower switch must have burnt out years ago and someone did a bodge.
It worked long enough mind.

Cool, just gotta find switches.... and always remember to switch them all in, in the right order :/

No, the dashboard mounted push buttons, I suppose they are not all that modern now but they were all the rage a few years ago.
