2.0HDI Picasso black smoke Urgent help needed!

Post by Lawrence1973 »

Hello All,
I recently replaced the crank pulley on our Picasso as it decided to disintegrate. All was well after the new pulley was fitted.
A week later, I experienced a loss of power and a slightly rattling engine accompanied by clouds of black smoke from the exhaust.

I managed to limp home but realised it was an intermittent problem - happening every few minutes or so with normal engine performance in between. It's now sat on the drive looking sorry for itself.

I need expert help to get our family run about running about again. Any ideas?

Cheers

Lawrence

A bit more detail would help..

Is this a Xsara Picasso, or C4 Picasso, is it a 90 or 110 version??

Just to try and point the right away. Black smoke is lack of Air to amount of fuel Injected..

So, IN THEROY. The ECU has detected and measured the Turbo Pressure in the inlet and so has injected the fuel for the equivilent boost pressure measured however, the excess air has not actually reached the inlet due to an Air Leak on the inlet side.

Is there an excess Hisssssing when revving the engine???

Check all your inlet pipe work, IF its a 110 with intercooler then its possible and highly likely one of the intercooler pipes could of split..

Thanks both,
It is the Xsara Picasso,
I am guessing it's the 90 but I'm not entirely sure. Is there an easy way to tell? Sorry feel like a blundering novice :?

No hissing, sounds sweet and running smoothly. Have you ever known an air filter clog enough to do this? It can't be the filter element because I changed it last year though.

I'll check the pipe work

Thank you

Lol. I double posted lol..

Picasso only ever got the 8v 2.0 in 90 bhp form. The 110 came with the dv6 engine which is easy to distinguish as the turbo is on the front of the engine..

your turbo pipes will be down the back of the engine. Get the front up on ramps SAFELY. . Then lie under the engine remove under tray if fitted have someone rev the engine up and see or carefully feel for boost leaks while the engine is revving to spool the turbo to create excess boost..

More info.

A superficial look at the pipework - all appears to be fine.

One thing of note: there is a faint hissing sound coming from the turbo charger side of the engine after switching off. It lasts for about a minute - sounds a bit like the sound of a coolant header tank cap being removed gradually.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
